no
however it never hurts to check ign timing occasionally. why are you replacing the stator? what tests have you done to insure its the failed part ?
WOT timing on that motor is controled by the position of the timer base. stator just provides power for the CDI and the battery charging system.

Re: rodbolt- stator

rodbolt im trying to figure out whats wrong. I have isolated my problem down to electrical. I used a different fuel source right up to the in line fuel filter. new fuel pumps and cleaned the carbs 3 times. finally to make sure I swapped carbs with my other eng. and im still dropping off a few hundred rpm at high end. new spark plugs, swapped spark plug coils, and cdi. same problem. also compression test was good. i dont have a peak volt meter so im thinking of taking off the flywheel to have a look at the stator for bubbles or discoloration and do a shake down test of the engine harnesses. any thoughts, thanks rodbolt

Re: rodbolt- stator

I think ya outta sprinf for a meter and test before buying and swapping.
that motor uses 2 pulser coils to drive 6 CDI outputs, test the peak voltage out on the crank position sensor. also test the peak voltage out on the coil primaries. if its ok its not a stator. it still sounds like a fuel issue. have you tested the spark plug caps? check the airgap on the CPS and make sure the sensor is clean.
also check the voltage on the yellow wire at the bottom of the ecu. it must have 5 volts minimum. but you will be money ahead to find a DVM with a peak reading attachment. the one sierra sells through napa is the merc equivalent meter even though its an analog one it has a DVA scale.

Re: rodbolt- stator

some of my spark plug caps were testing out of range. i replaced the caps. i did clean the sensor. as far as fuel goes. i started at the tank. one tank 2 lines. 2 new fuel water sep. all new fuel lines a year ago. swapped fuel lines at the engines no change. fuel up to the eng is good. the line going into the eng. up to the in line filter and to the fuel pumps vacume checked good. put new o ring on in line filter checked again still good. then 2 new fuel pumps. after cleaning carbs and trying, i swapped carbs still same problem. i cant imagine it being fuel. the carbs that were overhauled worked great on the other eng. I did notice after using the boat for 15 min the problem happened at around 3500 rpm. it started sputtering (missing). then clear up. all plugs look normal color. when my rpm drops off it will not recover unless i throttle back and as soon as i throttle up it drops off at the same rpm. when i pulled the caps off the spark plugs one at a time, i did notice that the spark on some cylinders was stronger than others, so thats when i swapped the plug coils, no change and then cdi, no change. thats the reason why i want to look under the flywheel. thanks rodbolt for all your help...nick

Re: rodbolt- stator

you may or may not ever find it without the proper test eqiupment. but it still sounds like fuel, however in computer bypass mode 2 cylinders will not fire. a 10 min check with a DVA meter will confirm or eliminate the stator and CDI output. that motor has high and low speed charge coils, you can do a resistance test and a short to ground test on both. you can buy a meter and start testing or continue tossing time and money at it and hope ya dont blow it up before ya hit it, but there are lots of parts yet to test.
trust me spring for a few coins on a meter and you will be ahead of the game. even the merc meter sold by sierra in napa stores has a DVA scale.

Re: rodbolt- stator

ok- im looking into buying a fluke with a cdi adapter. tomorrow i will check for shorts to ground with the meter i own now and ring out the wires. thanks again rodbolt. your 100 percent correct about tossing parts and time.

Re: rodbolt- stator

merc used to sell an adapter that would work on any DVM. the merc meter is analog but is a lot cheaper than most. I cant find my sierra catalog but its in there under the merc section as part #91-99750 or any volt meter capeable of 400 VDC and up with merc DVA adapter 91-89045.

Re: rodbolt- stator

rodbolt- while im waiting for a dva, i decided to ohm out the stator. it looks like my high speed coil has a open circuit. I checked brown to red (low speed) it reads around 750 so i compared it to the other motor and it was the same so im assuming thats ok because the range i was given was 428-642 ohms. then i checked L to b/r (high speed) and it was open. the good motor read 75 which is in the range i was given 64-96. i ran out of time so on my next trip im going to make sure its not the plug or an open wire leading to the stator. by then i should have a dva to double check before buying a stator. any thoughts..thanks...nick

Re: rodbolt- stator

if its open its open. no need to DVA test an open circuit. but do check the wiring and connectors. its rather rare but they do fail.

Re: rodbolt- stator

with an open circuit on the high speed coil im kind of surprised i could get up to 4700 rpm.hopefully its the connector or wiring close to the connector because i could not get the nut to move off the top of the flywheel. i have it soaking right now. ill post the results. thank you very much for all your help rodbolt.....nick
