Hi experts,
I've got a 1985 Suzuki DT40 which I purchased recently which pull starts well, seems to have good compression can be throttled right open in neutral gear and idles happily. But as soon as I put her in gear, she splutters a bit and stops completely. It will restart in neutral gear and all seems fine till put into gear once more when it again splutters and dies.
Has anyone come across such a fault ? Is it easily rectified ?
Any information gratefully accepted.

I have a 1984 DT 50 that does the same thing....Maybe someone will advise what to do.

Have you cleaned the carbs out?
Is your primer bulb hard?
Fuel delivery problems?
Maybe your idle speed setting is too low?
Does your prop rotate freely when disengaged? Maybe have fishwire wound around propshaft?

Hi,
Maybe it is time to replace the fuel pump (rubber Diaphragm Set)? Does not cost much. Check out brownspoint.com

If its in the driveway , my dt40 idles about 900rpm on the muffs. When in water that comes down to 650 with the back pressure. Carb cleanout is a very good idea , get the overhall kit and new diaphram set. Might as well do the water pump and lower unit gear lube change. Its all easy stuff but you'll need the manual. Get the oem I've got both and the Suzuki manual is much better.

I had similar problem with my DT8 after I changed the water pump. Later I realised it was due to not connecting the upper gear rod at the right height to the lower gear rod while reassembling the lower shaft after the water pump change. try to play with that height.
