Bought this motor last year without a manual. It's running great, but I would like to change the impeller. Loosened all bolts for lower unit but couldn't separate even using a mallet. Does anyone know if there is something else connecting the lower unit or shaft to the motor? The motor has been used in salt water so I'm hoping that I don't have a corrosion problem.

That's why it's best to get a manual first. There is shift rod linkage that needs to be disconnected first.Best to make up a couple of the bolts you removed first to release the strain on the shift linkage. Also make sure you know the location of "all" of the bolts to be removed.

Thanks for your comments. I was holding off ordering the manual until I received confirmation that there is something else to disconnect (rather than corrosion which would cause me to take it in for service). Just ordered the manual today. Do you happen to know if special tools required to disconnect the shift linkage? The motor is in Florida; I am in Wisconsin. Want to make sure that I bring down everything I need to get the job done correctly when I return to Florida next month.

No special tools required other than common wrenches and socket set etc...Let us know how it goes once you get to the motor. :)

how many bolts exactly did you remove? unless your shafts are corroded in there is no disconnecting the shift shaft its simply a male and female spline.

I only removed the exposed ones; didn't know about the two unexposed, so I do not expect any problems. Thanks for your comments.

Re: 1999 Yamaha 90 water pump impeller change

I just replaced my water pump impeller/gaskets on a c90 1999 Outboard

There is a black plastic cap that houses a bolt to remove the zinc anode
Once removed, the zinc anode can come off easily, furthermore, there is another bolt underneath the zinc anode housing that has to come off, then the lower unit will drop - make sure to disconnect the speedometer cable

Altogether there should be 6 bolts holding the lower unit on

Hope this helps,
