hello,
I just bought a 2000 40HP 4 stroke Yamaha(F40TLRY),long shaft, electric start and power tilt and trim. This motor has 20 hours on it but was stored for 5 years. shipped with no oil. I put new oil, changed gearcase oil and new gas tank. when I fired it up it started second try but I noticed gas was pouring out of the carbs so I turned it off and waited then tried agin-this time it wouldnt start but gas was pouring out again. It seems to come out everywhere not in one spot(has 3 carbs and looks to be coming from all of them but could be dripping down). No loose hoses.any ideas? I didnt replace the fuel filter (forgot)if the carbs are pluged is there a way to clean without taking apart. Also I was told the motor was witerized before storage.
Thanks
Robert

sounds like the needles and or floats are stuck from fuel varnish, the only fix is removal for cleaning and inspection.
not hard just time consuming.

Thanks rodbolt
I managed to get the float unstuck-so no more fuel coming out but now the motor wont idle for long and is very rough(at low idle). Runs great at a higher idle. Im sure I still need to clean the carbs because if the float was stuck there must be more crud causing the bad idle.Just wondering how easy it is? I have plenty of time to work on it. do I need a rebuild kit or just take apart and clean? The motor looks new and still has all the factory settings (yellow paint)on the carb adjustment screws. Just so everyone knows I started with a new fuel tank and primerball and hose, checked fuel filter and replaced plugs (those were all the things I read on other post to do with close to the same problem)
The guy that I purchased the motor from said if I wanted to take the carbs off and ship them to him he would "hot tank them" and ship them back to me! Not sure what a "hot tank" does or if its a good thing for them?
Thanks
Robert

sitting that long they need to be cleaned well.
cleaning them and refitting them alone wont fix your problem, they will need to be balanced with a vacuum guage set. setting them statically by eyeballing throttle plate position before instalation will get you close.

normally if you dont touch any of the throttle sych screws and they were correct before removal they will be close on reassy, once assembled after cleaning if the idle is unstable a dealership can sync the throttles with a vacum tree or the techmate in 15 min or so.

I use carb cleaner in a can all the time. I use the wally world tech stuff or CRC o6064.
yep its mostly a matter of dissasembly and reassembly.
but a service manual is nice. digital pics help out too.

Thanks rodbolt and benC for the replies
Just one last question.
There is no quick fix that MIGHT work? like spraying carbcleaner into the carbs while its running? (not sure how I would do that anyway)the only reason I ask is this motor only had 20 hours on it and if you could see it, it looks like a motor straight out of the crate(not a scratch from top to bottom)
Thanks
Robert

Re: 2000 40hp 4 stroke carburetor leak

I would have to say, that was alot easier that I thought it would be. Thought I was in for a long night when I opened the bottom carb. looked like syurup in the bottom and the needle valve was completly stuck. The middle carb only had a little fuel varnish in the bowl and the top carb was excellent shape.
The one question I have is I really am not sure how to adjust the float. I removed the screw that holds the float hindge and needle valve for cleaning. Any way this screw seems to be the only was to adjust the float hieght? I just put the screw all the way in and the floats seem to be .55 inches from the base like the spec sheet said. I guess we will see when I try to start the motor.
Ill let you know
Thanks
Robert

Re: 2000 40hp 4 stroke carburetor leak

Just Started the motor and it sounds and runs GREAT. It does have a small little bump in the ides-VERY small and only every so often-may even be normal or needs to run a little. I think ill have the dealer tweek the carbs when I take it in for a 100 hour service. Unless you think this could hurt the motor and I should do it sooner? first 4 stroke I have had and it sure is quiet and no smoke. I think Ill take it lobster fishing tonight.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!!
Robert
PS Rodbolt--I did buy and use a service manual like you said--made it very easy THANK YOU!!!
