I horse traded (wasn't a horse actually it was a trailer) for a 1994 15hp short shaft ele start, yamaha motor that the drive shaft was broken, and the prop shaft was bent, it was not run after the person hit a rock and broke the shaft because it would not turn the prop, the question is, how do I determine the proper shims to use when installing a new prop shaft? and is there anything else I should check and see about tolerances while I have it apart aside from the impeller which I will be replacing, thanks

Yamaha is not my strong suit but I see you're still waiting for a reply. A large repair to the geabox is best done with a manual however if you are going to try without this is how I would do it. Shims are most likely dictated by the gear housing and gears so assemble same way you found it. Check for backlash between the crown and forward gear without mounting reverse gear there must be a measureable (though tiny) amount then mount the reverse gear and check backlash again. watch for signs of wear in the gear oil.
Good Luck
Sirles pat
