70 Yamy impeller change = no reverse

I just completed 2000 70HP (70TR) impeller kit installation and all works except that I get no reverse.
Did not put into fwd prior to pulling lower case, did that impact adjustment? How do I adjust linkage? Also forward has to be brought slightly beyond neutral (toward reverse) to fully disengage. This all seemed pretty simple without- the book, but I did use the Yamaha parts schematic.

remove the gearcase, shift the unit into nutraul then place the shifter in nutraul.
I always do yamahas in nutraul.
just wish i could spell it.

then insure both shafts are in neutral at assy.

Can this be accomplished by pulling cotter pin at gear shift assy handle?

nope, if it was working fine when the case was removed and not when reinstalled you have the splines at the upper and lower joint misaligned.
drop the case, insure the shift slide on the block is in neutral and the lower is in neutral and try again. start messing with the rest and it will bite you.
if it was infact working when the case was first dropped.

I can center the gear shift assy, but how do I know exact center ( neutral position) of the lower unit shift spline? is there a mark, or do I have to experiment?

I personally have always used forward on a Yamaha. But you can tell if the gearcase is in neutral by spinning the prop shaft.

Re: 70 Yamy impeller change = no reverse

When I pulled apart, I tried to keep from any movement, but some is almost inevitable. Any way to kow where alignment should be? Placing in fwd sounds like it would have elimnated any possible misalignment, but that's not what I did, unfortuneately. No manual available through book dealer for 3-4 weeks, and being somewhat mechanically inclined, and Yamaha scehmatics seemed reasonab;e to attempt. Schematica were not !00% as did not show the bld under the cavitaion plate anode.

it showed it ya missed it. you can place the shift slide on the motor in any gear position and place the lower unit in the same position and reassemble it.
most of the slides are marked for nuetral.
if the slide has a mark then line up the center of the movable part with the mark on the slide and place the lower unit in neutral and reassemble it.

Rodbolt, You were right, I did miss it(bolt) on the schematic. NOW>>>>> I have pulled lower unit and ensured all aligned for neutral, even tried by hand by turning the drive shaft, appeared all to work - fwd, reverse, aligned and put back together. Started engine, still not reverse using the shift lever. I do recall there had been some times that it would not go into reverse during use. I don't use this boat real often and at 59. me memory lapses on occasion!
