no telltale stream

The last time I ran my 2004 Yamaha 25, 4stroke, tiller steer, was in January during duck season. We were in some pretty weedy areas.

Before going out today I changed the oil and filter and hooked up the motor flusher that'a located on the left side of the motor to make sure everything was running right. The water came out of all the places it was supposed.

When I started it in the lake however, there was no tell tale stream coming out. I snaked a little wire up there and tried again but still nothing.

What are the next steps I should be taking?

Thanks

Re: no telltale stream

if you have access to an air compressor- try shooting 100 pounds of air pressure up the "pee hole" with the engine running and see if you can dislodge anything that may be blocking the stream...then if not, you'll probably have to take the lower unit off and check the pump

I had the same problem with my Suzuki last year and was ready to start some "major" detective work. I had it running and happened to lean on the side of the engine and guess what, pee!! I guess when I took the cowling off to change the oil I replaced it a bit crooked or off center. I simply loosend it up, wiggled it a bit and tightened it back down again. It sounds like you might have something of the same issue since everything worked fine earlier. Good Luck!

Re: no telltale stream

I think the culprit is a chewed up impeller. I took the little intake screens off and a few pieces of hard rubber matterial fell out--very much like impeller fins.

The repair shop said to bring in the lower unit and they'll replace the impeller. I got the unit unbolted, disconnected the ground wire and I'm thinking I have to unbolt the gear **** rod where it's visible between the lower and upper unit--correct?

Yep, you definitely need a new water pump.
