Gamefisher Starting Problem

I have a Sears (Tanaka engine) Gamefisher 1.2 hp gas outboard. I had only used in once, 5 years ago. The gent who sold it to me used it maybe 10 times in the previous 10 years - so its in good shape.

I got a canoe, and decided to build a motor mount for this engine. I then tried out the engine and it wouldn't start. It was sparking, and would burn the WD40 for a couple seconds until that was gone. I replaced the spark plug, completely disassembled and reassembeld the carburator after cleaning it with gumout (it was sparkling clean). I also cleaned out the fuel tank and line and shut off valve as well. I can't remember if I put a fuel stabilizer in it when I stored it, so I removed the plug and put my finger over the hole and could feel sucton but not pressure.

So, giving in, I took it over to the local AutoLab, who charged me $60 and it was running in a half hour. I let it set for a week in the garage, and went to test it this weekend before going fishing.

Same thing - wouldn't start. I called the AutoLab and basically he said he sprayed some carb cleaner in the unit, played with the throttle a bit and got it to start several times.

I did this, and it doesn't fire up. The AutoLab will take it back and do it again for no charge, but I have a feeling that isn't the problem, and I would rather be able to fix it myself anyway.

If anyone has any clue or other things to try, please post.

Thanks

scott

Re: Gamefisher Starting Problem

Ahoy, Fundpilot.

WD-40 is no longer a suitable starting fluid for 2 strokes. They took the propane out and replaced it with CO-2. If you have the old stuff, it is labeled: Extremely Flammable! . The newer stuff is merely labeled: Flammable .

It is better now to use fuel premix.

Your symptoms are of a clogged carb or one that is not getting fuel from the tank. Are you sure you remembered to open the valve on the outlet of the tank? It is also true that a carb can sparkle with a plugged jet or orifice.

Good luck. :)

Re: Gamefisher Starting Problem

Hi Fundpilot: Re the possible carb problem, a teeny tiny piece of crud can block off or seriously diminish the flow of gas into the carb bowl if it is lodged in the float needle valve orifice. Remove the bowl and float/needle valve, and blow this out throughly thru the fuel line, then stand motor upright, hold a small container under the carb and open the valve to make sure gas is flowing freely. Then reassemble. This can be a real irritating problem in small gravity-fed carburetors because little particles can get caught and without the pressure of a fuel pump to blow them thru, they stay there and the motor runs erratically or not at all. Make sure fuel line, fuel filter and gas tank are scrupulously clean. Good luck - I have a little Tanaka 3hp. Cranky, noisy little b----rd.
