Hi all
I just was given a montgomery ward sea king 5. The model # is 45GG-90158. Can anyone tell me anything about this motor? like what year it was manufactured, parts available, manuals, etc? IT says the fuel mixture is 1/2 pint of 30 weight per gallon of gas. Do you guys recommend another oil?
I guess it ran 2 years ago but has sat dormant. I'm gonna try to get it goin this week.
Thanks

Re: Sea king 5 info

Your motor is a 54 Built by the Gale devision of
OMC.If I am reading my numbers correctly and if it is a full gear shift model it may be related to the E/J 5.5.Not identical but sharing some parts.
Possibly Pump, ignition, and carb.Service manuals for the E/J motors should serve. There may be some
E/J parts right here that may work.Well established E/J dealers may be able to help as well. All this is based on the assumption your motor is a full gearshift F-N-R model.
Use TCW3 rated 2 cycle oil at the same mix.

Thanks for the info. Actually, this motor is only "neutral & forward" For reverse, you just spin it around. The serial # is 528570

The motor is more Gale specific pretty much not related to E/J.It does share parts with some of the many private label motors Gale built. It may share some magneto parts with the Johnson TD20.

Re: Sea king 5 info

I got it running today! I still have a couple questions. I ran it for about 5 minutes three different times. Should water be spitting out somewhere and where? It has a couple louvers about 8 inches below the powerhead and water spits out of them once in a while. I did notice a tube right under the bottom cylinder that had air puffing out of it while it was running. I don't know if I need a new impeller or if it even has one. Where would I get one and also where would I get some oil seals for the lower unit? What about service manuals?
Thanks

There should be water coming out of the slots, if you have it low enough in the tub to cover the water intake. It shares many common parts with Evinrude/Johnsons of the same era. The guys on the Ask A Member board at http://www.aomci.org can probably tell you where to get parts...they are experts on the older iron. Acme Outboards has a sea king owners manual. Good luck. Those are stout and reliable little motors. Oh yeah, the impeller/pump is doing its job if the water jackets around the cylinders remain cool enough to touch when its running...be careful gauging this or you can wind up with a nasty burn if the pump if failed/failing.

Re: Sea king 5 info

I've been enjoying reading about the Sea King motor. I just came back from my cabin where I also have a Sea King 5 hp outboard. I'm wondering specifically whether there is an owners manual and parts manual available for it. I'm also wondering about the age. The information I have is:

Model: GG8960A
Serial: 75X663702

I bought it used about 15 years ago and it just continues to run like a charm and I'd like to keep it that way!

Re: Sea king 5 info

I also have a Sea King 5 from Ward.

I had it in the shop a few months back as it had sat around for 30 years or so...

Mech informed me hs installed a new impeller/cleaned carbs, etc.

- Engine starts on first pull, however, I see NO WATER leaving from ANY ports. There are 3 "chevron" shaped openings below the powerhead (as indicated in an above post) but I cannot tell if this is the water departure point.) I have ensured water entry points (suction) submerged during testing.

- Engine not reliable for more than a few minutes on setting other than idle, or very slow. Upon increasing throttle, engine misses (indicated by popping sound) and begins to stall out unless decrease in throttle immediately applied.

Do I need an new impeller? Or are there other exit posts for cooling water other than chevron-shaped louvres?

I ordered a manual today that will arrive in a few days -

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Scott, check your other post in this forum.
Rbruesehoff, your Sea King is a 1957 model, first two numbers of the serial number reversed. You can find a manual for it online...Ken Cook has them.
