Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak

Thanks all. I ended up installing Fel-pro's performance cork gaskets, part # 1648. They were a few mm's thicker and being rigid, stayed in the valve cover channel far better than the blue silicone ones. Seems another example of you get what you pay for as they were 3x as expensive. Cleaned all...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak

Thanks all. The valve cover is as I said new but I'll check it for flatness and the internal lip. Interesting that I'm having trouble not only with my OEM cover but this brand new cover as well, and only on this side of the engine. The gasket I was using was Fel-Pro's blue silicone. Possibly the...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak

All, I've recently installed two new heads on my 5.0GL following an overheat. I'm getting a persistent valve cover leak on the starboard side rear edge of the valve cover. Using new Fel-Pro rubber gaskets torqued per service manual. Leaked with old valve cover and I just replaced my OEM cover...

'99 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak question

Just to follow up on this thread, I tried using the great suggestions of plumber's putty to identify clearance issues and swapping covers around and after some adjustment, the original cover sat better but still not completely down on the head. I thought valve covers were all the same but it...

'99 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak question

I didn't as that valve cover has the oil fill hole and cap in the front. I inadvertently wrote port side in my original post but it is indeed the starboard side valve cover. I will flip it around and see if it sits down level. Thx!

'99 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak question

All, I recently finished installing new aftermarket heads from Marine Engines 4 less. On the port side of the engine my original OEM valve cover is not sitting flush and I'm leaking oil from the lowest corner at the aft end of the cover. I used an endoscope and I can see a 1-2mm gap between the...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Hey guess what happens when you rush? You make mistakes of course.......so when I put the wiring harness back on after reinstalling the heads, I inadvertently had the harness leads (purple + black) to the coil reversed. The leads from the coil to the distributor were correct. So looking back...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Thanks ESGWheel, I keep hoping for some good luck! I suppose since my compression numbers are good the new heads are likely fine, so I need to stop worrying about water getting in and focus on the current symptoms. Had I not just put new heads on and had an overheat, I'd be focusing on spark at...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Another update - I replaced my non-oem impeller with an OEM one and took it to the ramp. Temps never got above 175F and manifolds stayed cool. Boat idled well at the dock so I meandered around for about 10 minutes at about 1,500 rpms. All was well until it wasn't......motor suddenly died...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Thanks Lou. The impeller is new and the muffs fit very tightly. Three weeks ago when we tested the boat in the water (when head gaskets completely failed) the gauge on the dash appeared to show almost 210 before all of a sudden the engine temp dropped drastically down to 160 or so. At that time...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Ok, here's the update. I finished installing new cylinder heads with all new gaskets on all associated components, new temp sending unit, new temp gauge, and a new 160 degree thermostat. I started the boat on muffs at idle and it sounds good. I bought an Amazon laser temp gauge and took readings...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Thanks Sir. I did order head gaskets based off the VP part number, so I should be good there. Unfortunately the remanufactured heads from Jegs won't ship from the manufacturer until July 29th, so I'm not waiting for that. I can't find any other remanufactured options online so I'm inclined to...
