So for anyone finding this thread. I "manufactured" my own replacement button. It's just a 3/16" bolt. I cut off the threaded end and brought it down to 2.5" overall length. Works great! Cost $0.25.

You can shim the plunger on the shift mechanism. Maybe check that? The plunger shimming is more for disengagement issues, but it might be worthwhile to look at. The procedure is in the Clymer manual..I tried posting it but it's too big for the reply box.

Just curious-you turned the prop and said the up shaft isn't moving. What do you mean by the up shaft? Are you talking about the vertical shaft that meets the horizontal shaft where the propellers are located? Or...
