I have both of these motors. The 87 has a .52 main jet & WMC23 carb. This carb has a bigger venturi than on the 1996 which has a .48 main jet. The 87 is the 12 cu Powerhead and the 96 has the 16 cu inch. The 87 9.9 seems to have more top end speed.

I know the 12 cubic inch block has compression relief ports for easy starting, but does the 16 cubic inch also have these? I have a 87 9.9 with 100 PSI compression, and a 96 9.9 with 120 PSI. Could these ports be making the difference?
