I stripped my starboard dipstick threads (DPS). This is a common problem with Volvos. After a lot of research, I decided to have a machine shop insert a Time-Sert, which is a much stronger and better solution than a Heli-Coil. I had both drives done at the same time and it was well worth it.
Update: I got busy and almost forgot to update the thread with the conclusion.
I received the cleaned and tested injectors from High-Performance Injectors. They reported the injectors were fine but I had them perform the service anyway (excellent service, highly recommended). I cleaned the fuel...
Thanks for the tip! I'll go the cleaning route. I am not sure if HPI will replace the screens and seals. Do you have someone to recommend? Do you happen to know what size fuel line disconnect tool I need?
Alldodge, I will be sending the injectors to https://highperformanceinjectors.com/ to clean, flow & dynamic test them. I am tempted to buy a new Bosch set (https://www.ebay.com/itm/133366681559) for about the same money.
Brichh1260, I paid $330. I confirmed with Quantum that their pumps are not...
QBhoy, I am absolutely certain the newer VPS are filled from the bottom.
Alldodge, I've ordered a new fuel pump from Quantum Electric that I'll be installing sometime this week. But first I need to remove the fuel lines, fuel rail, and injectors to clean them out.
QBhoy,
Yes, Volvos are filled from the bottom up. It is a pain as you need to remove the duo props to do so. The oil did not look scorched to me and I wasn't missing as much as I thought so I think I am okay. Turns out I was missing a 1/4 of a quart. The engine problem was unrelated, I have a...
Alldodge, here is a photo of my TB with the flame arrestor removed.
I tested the high-pressure side of the fuel pump, on the fuel rail. I am only getting 20-22 PSI. I also tested the low-pressure side and that was about 18 PSI. I also notice the fuel pump is whining. I removed the pump and...
I have the drained drive gear oil in my garage and decided to remeasured how much I had drained. It turns out to be 2.22 liters. So I must have screwed up measuring the first time.
I was under the belief the DPS-B drive has a capacity of 2.7 liters but an online search says its capacity is 2.45...
The motor immediately stalls when revved in neutral so I assume it's a separate issue unrelated to the drive. I am going to try and resolve the motor issue first and then deal with the drive.
The drive is puzzling as it passed pressure and vacuum tests. I rotated the shaft for 5 minutes @5PSI...
Brich1260, I thought about that and may go down that road in the future. I was looking at the TechMate Pro. My concern with the tool was not knowing what to do with cryptic errors. With your tool, can you get error codes on the stern drive?
Alldodge, I'll be testing the fuel pressure tomorrow...
Turns out getting a Volvo Penta mechanic that has diagnostic tools around my area (Merrit Island, FL) isn't easy. After calling over half a dozen shops, I was finally able to schedule an appointment with one but they can't touch it until February 24th. So I guess no boating for me for at least...
Alldodge, the motor serial number is A320215. I replaced the fuel filter a week before the trip (less than a month ago, OEM filter). On the trip, I burned over 100 gallons of non-ethanol fuel. I'll remove and dump filter contents into a clear container next and try to scan for codes. Thank you...
Alldodge, today I tried to rev the engine while in neutral. The engine falters or dies as soon as I try to rev it. I tried several times and the same thing occurs, the engine struggles to rev up and just cuts out. It does however turn on and idle. So my problem seems to be with the engine and...
You are correct, two cables. I have this top-mounted control https://www.volvopentashop.com/epc/en-US/Details/AccessoriesCatalog/2345
I followed the cable that goes to the top of the engine. That cable links up to a small lever that moves back and forth. The other cable goes down into the...
