No don't see that as the issue You had noise under load, replaced gimbal and still have noise unloaded. I would say you need U-joints...

Those help absorb the load on the drive. When turning the load increases, so it can be heavy. Don't know what the effects would be over time

Ayuh,...... As noted above, there's supposed to be a stainless washer that sits on top of the shift spool, that holds the shift foot...

Ayuh,..... Probably not, as it has hose clamps on both ends,..... But having a can of Power Tune handy, is always a good thing...

the exhaust bellows is no fun to replace on a Merc drive... The tube is no louder nor more "messy" than a slightly torn/weatherbeaten...
