diagnose broken lower (clutch) shaft - 1957 7.5hp

Thank you for the replies! This makes sense about the shock absorber. I don't know how I missed it earlier but I found an older post that had a good image explaining how it works, and breaks. And I found a used one here in MN, so that's a start. With better lighting and more time I picked...

diagnose broken lower (clutch) shaft - 1957 7.5hp

Well that's good news about the washer. As far as the condition of the housing, the inner surface looks chewed up, but since the washer should be seated on it maybe that's ok. But are those ragged ears/tabs a concern? Or again a normal condition from how the housing was cast - or even...

diagnose broken lower (clutch) shaft - 1957 7.5hp

I recently rebuilt the lower unit, magneto, and carb on a non-working 1957 7.5hp. After reassembling lower unit the driveshaft turned but hard. Other (smarter) members advised this shouldn't be the case so I pulled it apart again, visually checked everything seem to align and mesh properly...

    1957 7.5hp AD-11 starts but won't draw fuel…troubleshooting

Not sure proper posting etiquette but I'm having a very similar issue to the person on this recent post (linked below) but that post didn't seem to get resolved. So rather than hijack that I thought I should start new. I have great spark, newly rebuilt carb (float checked, ok), new impeller...

Tap and die approach for Vintage OMC

As I move through the carb>powerhead>magneto>lower unit on my two vintage (late 50s) OMCs I've been finding several bolts/threads in need of TLC: gunked up, rough, and now a lower drain plug looks cross-threaded... On the 'cheap' - considering this and an old Lawnboy are the extent of my...

    Lower unit on a 1957 7.5hp - advice?

I'm trying to get running a 1957 7.5hp seahorse AD-11. First time working on an outboard. I've got good spark and compression now, so moving on to the lower unit. What I know: - It isn't from the AD-11. Is there a way to i.d. it? Or is it unimportant because if the housing fits the AD-11, does...

    1957 Johnson 7.5 AD-11 starting restoration

I wasn't able to get any reading between plug boot spring and frame. So I went through the following steps: 1) pulled the coil off, and took a reading between the spike that goes into the plug wire and the primary/secondary leads. Both read 4.25 kohm. I checked the other coil and that's 4.25...

    1957 Johnson 7.5 AD-11 starting restoration

Hmm…no coils are not cracked, and they also aren't red like yours crosby. Some parts are so clean I have to believe the previous owner did work on it, though he claimed he just ran it a few years in the late '90s and then set it aside. Second photo shows the primary a bit better, screwdriver...

    1957 Johnson 7.5 AD-11 starting restoration

I tracked down and bought my grandfather's '57 7.5hp seahorse! I'm digging in with hopes it can be brought back to life. First time working on an outboard and I've read 50+ good posts on this site, yet questions are piling up. Probably deserves multiple posts (?) but here's where I'm at. All...
