I'm looking at a 1999 Cobalt with a Volvo Penta 7.4GSIPEFS engine (s/n Engine 4110199747 and Out Drive 4112061762).
This 7.4GSi engine is rated at 405bhp, which is almost as much as the V-P 8.1GI and GXI category, with a displacement of 7.4l vs 8.1l.

I'm interested in a 2001 Cobalt. The Cobalt factory has confirmed that the HIN was originally built/equipped with a Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI. The current owner has sent me the attached engine picture and claims that it is the original engine in the boat.
Does anybody recognize this engine as a GXI...
I'm considering down sizing from my current 1997 Cobalt 252 with a V-P 7.4 GI D-P to a 2000 Cobalt 226 V-P 5.7 GSI D-P.
Is the Volvo Penta 5.7GSI engine inherently less reliable than the Volvo Penta 7.4GI?
My research shows quite a few complaints about the TBI fuel system on the 5.7 liter GSI...
Looking at a V-P engine, serial no - 4110151197. Motor is still in boat. Hour meter says 43 hrs, boat is used infrequently, last service records show same 43hrs back in 2009.
V-P service mechanic at dealership says that the true engine hours can be extracted with appropriate diagnostic plug...

I was trying to identify my out drive in a previous post - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=529815 - turns out it is a DP-S drive.
I have since learned from the boat manufacturer that Volvo Penta had a paint "peeling" problem with their out drives back in 2002-2003.

P.T. 2x4 bunks (Lowes/Home Depot). Covered on top side with a 2x3 vinyl downspout cut in half, lenghtwise for a perfect fit and excellent drainage

OK, we're getting closer. According to the manufacturer of this boat, only 3 Volvo Penta engine choices were available in 2001 in the 8.1L (496 c.i.) class: the Gi and two versions of the GSi (no GXi - too bad).

Yeah, what threw me off was the lack of a cover ... which it is missing (strange).
