MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil

Re: MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil Ok, speedi sleeve installed! Not too bad.. I used a wire wheel to clean up the original seal surface, then emery cloth, and cleaned it all with brake cleaner. I got lucky and found a piece of metal pipe (maybe 2"?) with a coupling on it, and the...

470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger?

Re: 470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger? Well, hopefully this is the main cause of the overheating issue. These pieces were jammed up in the water pocket in the upper unit. I was able to fish two of the pieces out through the horizontal water channel that leads into...

MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil

Re: MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil So no luck on trying to tap the gear away from the bearings... it seems to be pressed together tightly. How should I go about breaking the bearing loose from the gear so that I can perform the rolling torque? Do I need some sort of wedge to tap in...

MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil

Re: MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil Here's the yoke seal surface. Not so good. I don't think the 40 thousands deeper trick would have worked here, right? I'm glad I went ahead and ordered the speedi sleeve! The yoke appears to have heavy grooves as well as pitting past the groove surface.

MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil

Re: MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil Got the yoke and bearing assembly out of the housing, not too hard at all. The first thing I notice is a good bit of red sealant around the retainer nut thread, which ended up inside the housing around the bearings and seal... not too much though. Not...

MC-1 u-joint bellows full of gear oil

To make long story short, I pull the upper unit from the boat (lower was already removed from upper) and gear oil came spilling out from the u-joint bellows. It was quite a bit of fluid, not just a little bit. Is this likely the oil seal(s) on the yoke? I've been doing a ton of searching on...

470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger?

Re: 470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger? Ok so the local Merc shop has the impeller/housing kit in stock, so I'll be picking that up in a little bit. When I pulled the sea water hose from the intake part of the voltage regulator and ran the engine for a few seconds...

470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger?

Re: 470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger? Quick question: Does iboats not sell the Mercruiser pump housings and impellers? All I see is Sierra and Mallory. Edit: Since I can't find the kit on iboats, is this the kit that I would need for all of the parts? I have a #1...

470 overheating, is this normal flow through the heat exchanger?

Hey guys, finally got the boat on the water today for the first real test run (after a fail last weekend with a busted steering cable). The motor runs good as does everything else, but it overheats. While idling, it will sit at 180. Very soon after putting in gear, it will creep up to around 200...

Swim platform with longer top mounting rails

I think I've decided to skip trying to put a full-width swim platform on my boat and just go with a small platform on the port side. Seems easy enough, but all of the I/O platforms I've found seem to have mounting rails that go straight up, assuming that the platform will be mounted entirely on...

Memory lapse: Do screws also go behind the cap trim?

Since I took the cap off my boat over two years ago, and have had it temporarily reinstalled with several screws through the cap into the hull just to squeeze the two pieces together while the sealer cured, I have forgotten if there were also screws behind the aluminum trim piece around the cap...

    Capacity Placard Requirement

Is a boat capacity (persons/weight) placard required on a boat that has been restored? Or one that may not even have had a capacity placard installed from the factory? I have never seen one on my boat, nor can I find any information on the factory recommended capacity. I have seen several...

Filling the cooling system - 470

I drained all (or most) of the antifreeze from my 470 so I could replace it with fresh 50/50 mix. I followed the procedure from the manual to fill up the coolant system, but it seems that when I fill the reservoir 1" from the filler neck, and then crank the motor, as the motor warms up, the...

bunk board question.planning on replacing mine

Re: bunk board question.planning on replacing mine Just use carriage bolts... they will countersink themselves as you tighten them, and if they become loose, you can just tighten the nut a bit to snug them up. I just rebuilt the bunks on my trailer with this method. Install the bolts, then...

    Installing transom-mount ski tow ring

I have one of these on the way from iBoats: Which, at first, isn't clear at all how to connect a ski rope to it. I've read of a few different methods, but this is the only picture I could find of one with the rope connected to it: Is this the correct way to hook the tow rope to this tow...
