    too much voltage?

In recently purchased '89 SeaRay 160 w/ 100hp outboard, dash voltage gauge shows 17.5 to 18 volts when I'm running around 3000rpm. Seems unusually high based on my experience with other vehicles, but this is my first outboard. Should I be concerned, and if so what to troubleshoot?

    Confusing cooling issue...

Thanks. Based on my experience with prior boat, an inboard, an impeller problem would cause continuous temp rising to overheating, and wouldn’t get cooler with engine or boat speed. Am I missing an obvious difference with outboards?

    Confusing cooling issue...

Inaugural launch yesterday of '89 SeaRay with Merc 100hp outboard. After starting, I was running the motor for a while to warm it up. As I pulled slowly away from the dock, I realized the temperature (on dash gauge) was getting high, approaching 220. As I increased the RPM a bit, the gauge...

oil injection on circa 1989 Sea Ray 100

I just purchased a Sea Ray 160 with a 100hp outboard from 1989 or 1990. The outboard has Sea Ray logos but I believe these were made for Sea Ray by Mercury. It has only 300-some hours and runs fine, though a bit hard to start after sitting. A neighbor much more knowledgeable about boats...

    Perplexing electrical issue

Got this back from the Glasply forum: "No wiring diagram exists. If you think there’s a bad wire, abandon it and running a new one to see if that fixes your issue. Not sure what condition your GP is in but after 40 years the wires certainly become brittle and do not work so well." lol

    Perplexing electrical issue

Thanks for the many helpful suggestions. Fuse box not marked as far as I can tell. There is some old masking tape on some of the wires indicating what they are, but some are faded or have fallen off. I do have 12v at the starter solenoid. Other stuff I discovered: 1. The big red wire is...

    Perplexing electrical issue

Right. I’ll try to find appropriate diagram. Problem presented before I had done anything to the starter, and I am pretty sure the new one is wired correctly. Same model starter and I took photos so I could replicate how it was wired. I did just pull the big red wire from the ignition and I’m...

    Perplexing electrical issue

Super helpful! I think I have wiring diagrams in my manual, will attach photos. Not seeing any reference to blower. I’ll proceed with those suggested tests and see where that leads me. Thank you dingbat!

Forgot to mention this is a 1980 Glasply with an OMC 120hp sterndrive.

    Perplexing electrical issue

Under way last week, thought we smelled something like burning plastic, then voltmeter started jumping all around. Killed motor to look around, and it would not restart. Not even the gauges moved. No sign of any electrical power. Never pinpointed the smell, but it seemed to be coming from under...
