I spend quite some time setting the needles and the timing. This is the best I could come with..... As I discribe in posts above the needles are nowhere near the default position... If I set them at around the factory 2 turns the engine dies....
Update.
After some time messing with several things around the carbs and the linkages I managed to make the engine running as good as I could.
To make it idle right both idle screws have to be about 5 turns from fully screwed and the idle spark screw has to be about 3/4 of an inch instead of 1/2...
Yes, I readjusted all that according to the service manual. Now when idle there is no pressure to the carb roller and both carb horns are snap closed. They move in sync when I open the throttle...
About the needle I can assume that some previous mechanic changed it from another engine and I can accept that it works at 5,5 turns instead of 2,5.
The thing that buffles me is the suggested idle position of the roller in conjunction to the position of the idle screw that is supposed to be...
Well it is not broken but it does not look round at the tip like the one of your photo. It looks like its tip is flat. Both carb needles look the same...
That is exactly how it is described in the manual.
In my case if the needle is 2,5 turns from fully screwed the engine does not start. I keep unscrewing and trying and at 4-4,5 turns it starts but does run rough. At 6 turns it runs nicely and there’s no more change even at 10 turns….
Also I...
the roller was damaged when I got the engine. Only the black core was present . I made a custom one out of teflon. It rolls nicely but the diameter is a guesstimation .... I made it about 95% of the space available... Johnson parts are hard to find here.
My carb’s idle needle handles air, not fuel. So practically it requires more air than normal. About the synchronization of the throttle linkages, I did it from scratch. But when the engine is running idle there is no tension on the linkages. Both carburetors are fully closed by their springs.
"checking the syncing" ... What do you mean? At what point do I have to have the cable disconnected?
I am Greek so I am struggling a bit with the language....
Yes, I used OEM parts. The top carb plastic cover is a bit warped but the rubber seal appears to be evenly pressed against the carb. If there are air leaks they are too minor to detect. The spark lever position has much more effect to the idle speed than the idling needles with the spring. The...
