Proper Oil For Oil Bath Hubs

Good point. Using synthetic on my saildrives I've managed to achieve about the same pressure on both sides of the seal, but can't do that on wheel seals!

Proper Oil For Oil Bath Hubs

What is the preferred oil for oil bath hubs? I've heard any 80-90 weight gear oil is OK; I've read you should use oil made for hypoid rear ends, and other recommendations. Lucas Oil sells a Hub Oil, and Amsoil has a synthetic 75-90W that they claim protects with 15% water contamination (I...

    Honda BF4?

Looking for a BF5 long shaft, and dealer says he has a BF4 longshaft. I don't see a 4 hp in current Honda line, so I guess was discontinued. Is there a restrictor plate that was installed to reduce the horsepower...that can be removed? Thanks!

    New Yamaha 25 Shakes

Just replaced an ETEC 25 with a new Yamaha F25LWTC. I've only run it maybe 2 hours, but I'm surprised at how much it shakes...or vibrates... especially 1200 to 2500 rpms. Smooths out somewhat as speed increases, but it's still there. It can make your teeth rattle, and something rattles within...

PTT Switch With Center Console Mounting

I’m not sure if all shifters are like this, but when I mounted the Yamaha shifter to the center console, sure, I could move the shift lever to the other side of the shifter but now the PTT switch is no longer where I can easily operate it, certainly not with my thumb. Is there any good...

Water In The Gasoline?? Or Ignition Problem?

2000 Tohatsu M30 A4 Last year was at times hard to start, and ran poorly. Someone suggested getting a carb kit, which I installed myself (having never touched a carburetor before) and lo and behold, it ran fine! I didn't find a need to adjust any mixture settings, other than trying to...

    Rebuilding 30A4 Carburetor

First time. For me and for the carb. Motor is nearly 20 years old. With less than ideal light, and eyeballs, I didn't notice which way the wire clip attaches to the float valve pin when I took it apart. Heck, I didn't even see it at first. Looking at the parts diagram it looks like the...

    Spare Tire Mount

I may need to install a trailer tongue hinge, and if I do, it would help to install the spare tire mount such that the tire is mounted horizontally (rather than vertically) offset to one side. Has anyone done this?

Mixing Non Ethanol Gasoline and E10

I understand that is not a good idea. True?? I have an 18 year old Tohatsu 30 hp 2 stroke that has not been unhappy running on E10 (as long as I keep the gas fresh and stabilized). But I needed to buy a gallon for reserve, and was non ethanol. I've kept it separate, didn't need it at the...

Am I Fushing The Engine Or Just The Water Pump?

Over 15 years ago I bought (my first EBay transaction) a kit of brass and plastic hose fittings that an outboard mechanic sold to flush a non-running motor “backwards” thru the pee stream fitting. I questioned him about whether the flow would go thru the cold power head but he claimed it would...

Old Johnson 85 hp, Tilts Up But Not Down

I'm helping my neighbor with her old boat. The motor is over 20 years old, two stroke. Age old issue, hasn't been run, so things deteriorate. Trims up fine (it's all the way up now), but switching "down", we have the same sound, plus a screech along with it. I'm guessing there is a control...

    Installing Anodes On Outboard

Does it make sense to smear grease on the bottom side of an anode, and maybe on the threads of the securing bolt, where it will contact the (brushed clean) surface of the lower unit? Anything to help prevent corrosion that would reduce conductivity. I figure tightening the bolt will squeeze out...

    Yamaha F75 Timing Belt Replacement

2003 motor (bought "new in the box" in '07) with light usage, maybe 500 hours. Timing belt looks virtually new, but I know the consequences of failure, so think I should replace it. I have changed these on automobile engines; is this much more difficult? It looks like the flywheel needs to be...
