question: what all motor will just bold right up and use the shift cables and all other wires?

there is a little steel wire coming out from behind a plate on the lower left of the motor stadning behind the motor. it just grounds to a screw on the outside there.it comes off a thing under that plate with a rubber bushing or something on it.<br /><br />this wire broke. is it needed ? do i...
i put my lower unit back on and to my surprise, the little rubber piece that the shift rod goes through pop off and was laying there. is this piece neccessary? i dont see where it seals anything and the bottom of it is clean. if not i have to take the whole thing apart again!!
