I thought the same thing but couldnt see behind my engine because of the way by boat is built. Turns out I had a upper housing driveshaft seal leak and drive oil made its way through the bellows to the bilge.
I just installed and set the resistance for mine today. I wasnt getting any resistance at first either. Just had to tighten the nut a little more. Then worked my way up very slightly checking each time.
Great information. I didnt realize that was the name of the retainer nut. I was thinking thats seemed a lot of torque for a pinion nut. lol
I took it apart today and replaced the seal and large o-ring. I was very surprised how loose the pinion nut was. I'll have my rolling torque wrench...
I believe I'm understanding. Torque the retainer nut until I get 6-10lb-in of rolling resistance. I'm reading that the retainer nut torque is 200ft-lb? But this could vary due to the rolling resistance?
Alldodge, I have a regular torque wrench. Got the spanner today and removed the driveshaft and gears. Tomorrow I hope to tackle taking the gears apart to get to the seal. I should be able to press the new seal onto the ring. Do you know the torque spec on the nut? I don't have a manual.
Need to change the driveshaft oil seal on my Bravo 3. I've had some drive oil in the bilge for last couple seasons and I thought it was a leaking reservoir. Removed the outdrive yesterday and the bellows was full of oil. My thoughts are the only place it can be coming from is a leaking seal...
