I have completely disassmbled a lower unit. The oil was in horrid condition. I would like to clean the parts am unsure what cleaner to use. Would carb cleaner hurt anything (as long as I washed thoroughly afterwards)? Any other suggestions?

My 1994 Mariner has electrim trim. No leaks and strong battery. Full of fluid. However the trim is incredibly slow. Could the crushes be worn out in the trim motor?
Trying to remove the lower unit from my 1994 60 hp mariner. Removed five bolts from lower unit (including one under adjustment fin). Still not wanting to drop. Do I need to remove any clips/etc. from gear lever? thanks
