I'm completely new to outboards. Nine times out of ten when I engage drive the prop spins with no resistance; the odd time it turns the motor over. What is this likely to be, and how do I check? Many thanks.

Can anyone give me a few pointers as to what I should do before trying to start my 1979 Evinrude 55. It was last run nearly three years ago and wasn't prepared in any way for storage. I guess a water pump overhaul is in order, but how about the motor itself?

I've just bought a boat with a mid 80s DT85. I've been test running it in a barrel but can't see where the cooling water is pumped from. Other outboards I've used have the water pumped from the head area or top of the leg. Does this engine return it under water?
