BTW, I can't let this post just take it's last breath without saying thanks to everyone with the helpful comments, especially to @nola mike with the super helpful comments and walking me through this process. Now it's on to finding my replacement gauges.

I cleaned the fuel sending connections, they needed cleaning but it didn't make a difference. I agree about the fuel gauge, it's not worth any more effort. On the tach, I cleaned the connections on the coil (they were in good shape), tested it, and no change. I disconnected the grey sending...

Being wonky, the tach would pause, then jump to an RPM that was near accurate, it would do this randomly, and slowly increased in frequency till now it's mostly just dead, rarely moving, right now it thinks it's running about 4,000 RPM's, key off/key on/engine running. The hour meter hasn't...

I consider the fuel gauge to be a minor issue, but nonetheless I notice it. I trust the fuel gauge in the key on position, but key off doesn't drop below the "E" line like it used to. On to the next test. That is correct on the voltmeter test with engine running.

I'm not sure what happened there in my original comment about the voltage, so I redid the test with the Key on, and it is reading 12v. I must have messed that one up, sorry about that, it's not right for me to be asking for help and I'm giving bad info. :( The other gauges (fuel and tach) did...

I'll get around to checking this next week, after our company leaves. Appreciate the suggestion. (y)

This is our 4th of July family week, it's being crazy around here. But it's so much nicer than on the 4th weekend, don't have to deal with the boat ramps and lake traffic. I tested the voltage at the gauge leads connected. Key off - 0.00 volts, Key on the voltage fluctuates between 0.00 and...

I haven't removed my gauges yet, not sure I'll need to at this point. I may end up taking your lead on this. (y)

You've got quite a project there. Sounds like we're thinking along the same lines, and it's like reading something I would have written, with your puns and such. I've never seen anyone else use the "paralysis by analysis" before, it's a real thing. I really don't want to go as high as $500...

I disconnected the battery, and the gauges stayed the same. I notice the fuel gauge is closer to accurate with the key off, but normally it's below the E line when off. Pic 1 is battery connected, key off Pic 2 is battery disconnected (no change) Pic 3 is battery reconnected, key on. What is...

Thank you for all the replies. I'll disconnect the battery, good idea. dingbat, I haven't considered it an over voltage issue, although I should get my multi meter out and check it with the engine running. I've been thinking that with the gauge showing about a 1/4 high from the get go, I...

I'd almost rather have bad gauges, but it would be a lot worse to go through the expense and work of replacing them, only to not make a difference. Our daughter bought the same boat as ours a few years ago, and had to have panel of electrical connections replaced, that was an ordeal. I better...

Honestly, now that you ask, I'm not sure. Could there be something else I'm not aware of?

My tachometer has been going out for a few years, last year my voltmeter starting pegging at 16 volts all the time, till I turned off the motor, then it would settle on 4 volts (wouldn't drop to zero). Now my fuel gauge is doing the same as the volt meter. Turn the motor off, and it drops to 1/8...

The one broke off at the base, no stud at all. I'm thinking of going the latch route, it's pricey but it would be a permanent solution. Thank you for the suggestions. (y)
