No mud dobbers (at least not many) around here. Interestingly I think you are correct about the temp. The ones I ordered say 143 degrees. But they're identical parts and shop to the ones I measured at 170. Maybe they start opening at 143 and fully open higher. I didn't carefully observe.
1978 85hp Evinrude fairly well cared for over the past 8 years I have owned it.
First time in water this year motored about 100 yards and the overheat alarm went off. I had previously tested in my driveway and the pee stream worked and the thermostat valves worked.
Back in the driveway I...
Hi folks. I've got a 1978 Evinrude 85hp V4 that won't shut off when the key is turned off or removed.
The problem was intermittent until recently and now it seems to be happening all the time.
I saw some related posts but those seemed for older models in which the wiring is different. I also...
To be clear the mechanic did not call it a "big problem," I did since he said they couldn't handle it and I had to take it a good distance away for the right expertise.
To be more specific, it's one of the bolts that holds part #29 in the attached diagram below to the block. The bolt is broken...
Hey all... I stupidly over tightened one of the cylinder head bolts in my 1978 85hp Evinrude - at least that's what I assume it is - one of the bolts that holds the whole water jacket and top of the cylinders on and I broke it off way down in there.
I took it to a local shop and it can't be...
Second post in as many minutes but different subject...
I have a 1978 85hp Evinrude that won't shut off using the key about 25% of the time. I've read about the problem and it sounds like an electrical connection problem (duh) and that when the key is on, some circuit is open; then when key is...
Hey guys,
I live on a river and watch the frequent boat traffic go by. When I see 1970s era Johnsons or Evinrudes go by, I compare them to mine and have a basic question.
On many of the running motors I see, the high ports on the back are not producing water/exhaust. By high ports, I mean the...
Sort of a newbie outboard owner here. I know they say there's no such thing as a dumb question but this seems like one.
I have the 1978 OMC gas cans (pictured) for my 85hp '78 evinrude. As far as I can see there is no vent for air to enter the can as gas is withdrawn.
Until I forgot today...
Re: 1978 85hp Evinrude overheats one side on hose
Hey guys,
As suggested, I detached the hoses and ran the motor in my new "bucket rig" (see picture like it? :)) just to ensure enough water was getting in.
I got a good stream of mildly warm water coming from both heads. Running in this...
Hey folks,
I have a 1978 Evinrude v4 85hp motor and after storing my boat indoors for the icy winter, I changed plugs and restarted it today on the muffs. I let it warm up a while. It was working fine before I stored it.
In the past I thought one side of the cylinders seemed hotter than the...
Hey folks,
First time boat owner (3mos or so) and have a 1978 Evinrude 85hp v4 on a 16' Yar-craft tri-hull.
Searching these forums has been super helpful so here I am hoping for some expert answers.
Boat was running pretty well for a while. Had some minor power loss / surge at WOT but...
