I need to replace my shift commander (1984 Alpha One Drive) and most replacements require Gen II cables. There seem to be a few Gen I compatible controllers out there. Is it worth switching to the Gen II cables? Is the engine end on the Gen II cables the same as Gen I?

The bracket and air fitting shown in the picture was attached to the top of my Alpha One sterndrive. It is clearly an air hose coupler, but its just a dead fitting, there is nothing connected to the back of it. Can anyone tell me what this was for?
