    water shutter inspection

Hi, 1992 Mercruiser 5.7L, Gen. 2 outdrive. I want to inspect the exhaust water shutters (slight ticking). Does the riser need to be removed to get the elbow and rubber boots off of the y pipe? All clamps are loose but can't horse the elbow off. Or am I just not trying hard enough? Don't want to...

    home made gaskets

I needed a continuity gasket for the thermostat housing for a '92 5.7L Merc. Local dealer say's ''does'nt see the need for them" and does'nt stock them. Made my own gasket without rivets and temp gauge did'nt work. Ordered gasket from here and delivery date is 10 days. Have to go with predicted...

    Who knew

Last night (Saturday) the Wife and I were at our friends house. We had a few "pops" and I decided to take some back roads home (rural New York) to avoid the main, policed roads. About half way home we heard and felt something hit the truck. I'm thinking it's a deer. This is a dark, secluded road...

    Compressed Natural Gas

On another thread "Uraijit" mentioned installing a natural gas kit on his engine. I've been wondering about this. We have a 1992 Wellcraft Eclipse with the 5.7L Mercruiser I/O. Feasibility? Coast Guard Approved? You can get a "fill station" installed at your home to hook into your gas supply in...

    Seasons over

We had an excellent time out on the lake this year. This was possible in large part to this sites regular contributors. They gave their advice and technical know-how willingly even though, being new to boating, my questions were pretty "same old-same old". So thanks to, in order of appearance...

    Shifting

Hi. Just a question out of curiosity. I know from this great site how the interrupt switch works to allow shifting on my Mercruiser Alpha 1, but after going out on my neighbors Crestliner with an outboard ( Mercury 115 ), I got to wondering how shifting is accomplished on an outboard. Same...

    shifting

HI, all. I own a Mercruiser I/O which has an interrupt switch to allow you to shift. My neighbor has an Mercury Outboard and I was wondering how it works on these? Same principle? Thanks, Gary

    1992 Alpha 1 Gen 2 trim hoses

I'll be replacing the trim hoses to the trim cylinders and was wondering if a sealer is used on the threads? Thanks, Gary

Alpha 1 Gen 2 trim hoses

Hi. '92 Mercruiser MCM 5.7L / Alpha 1 Gen 2 sterndrive (OD 648230). I was giving things the once over and noticed that all the metal crimps on the trim cylinder hoses on the drive have a crack running the length of the crimp. Is this normal or something to be concerned about? I'd rather do...

    Thermostat housing spacer

Thanks for responding. It's a 1992 MCM 5.7 L. Ser. #OD711281. I have a service manual that shows this housing and its components. Doesn't tell how to remove them. There is corrosion. Just not sure how tight the fit is in the housing. Thanks, Gary

    Thermostat housing spacer

Is there a trick to removing the thermostat housing spacer above the thermostat? I don't want to damage anything trying to get it out. It's a Mercruiser 5.7L (seawater system). Alpha 1 Gen II sterndrive. Thanks in advance for any help. Gary

    reverse trolling (tongue in cheek)

Hello, All. My neighbor had a trolling plate attached to his outboard while he was waiting for his trolling motor to arrive. After it arrived I bought his plate for my stern drive. I have a 5.7L Mercruiser and the plate wasn't doing much so I decided to use it in reverse gear. The flat surface...

    brackish water

Just what are the effects of brackish water on an engine? Have a boat that started out in freshwater. Then was used in brackish bay water (7yrs.). Now it's back in freshwater. Thanks, Gary

    Damage control

Hi. Got a boat from my brother in law. 1992 with a 5.7L Mercruiser and Alpha 1 drive. Great shape and runs great. Shifts great also but when I try to give it more throttle in reverse the cutout switch moves up and it stalls out. He reluctantly told me that he once removed the drive in reverse...

    Alpha1 shift cable routing

Hi. Is it absolutely necessary to route the shift cable under the engine and up the starboard side or could it be routed straight up the port side and over? It's a 1992 Wellcraft 5.7L I/O with power steering and there's a lot more room on the port side. This is my first boat and first time...
