I have the same questions and this looks like a good idea. Thank you for figuring it out.
I have an old simplex cable that fits my 77 35hp evinrude but my new cable and control has that stainless pin that I need to remove to be able to slide my simplex end on. This could do the trick.
Omg. Just found the problem. Impeller key fell in there. Thank you everyone. And thanks you Mat!! He asked me to check in the hole and there ut was. I am so dumb 🤣
The drive shaft to the motor isn't the problem. Its the gear case side from the impeller. It will not seat all the way into the gear case. Still have a half inch from fully seated. My propeller shaft will not spin the drive shaft because the driveshaft isn't seated all the way in to be engaged.
Was changing my water pump impeller and my drive shaft came out from the gearcase. Now it will not seat completely. Still a half inch gap from the gearcase and will not slide in even wen I spin the prop. Please help. 1978 evinrude 35hp 35853R

Thanks again.

I've taken the lower end off and flush the water tube from the bottom up. Water flows through the thermostat and the pee hole.
I've...
Turns out I have no thermostat installed. Might explained why my motor is not peeing.
I cannot find a complete, assembled thermostat for my 1993 Johnson Outboards 9.9 [ J10RETM]?
All I've found was bits and pieces from Crowley. Can anybody help me find a completely assembled thermostat please?
Thanks for pointing me to the right direction! My curiosity has gotten the best of me and I opened up the thermostat housing above the spark plug area.
Low and behold it was bone dry and a heap of dirt and dust. I blew air through the tail tale and was able to feel air. Plugging the thermostat...
