This is my housing and the brass sleeve, thermostat and gasket. I have the thermostat in two different configs. On my last build I had the brass sleeve with the lip on the bottom and the thermostat underneith, but no gasket as with one, the brass sleeve protruded above the hole preventing the...
Ok. Interesting to note. I believe mine are seized closed due to the long hibernation allowing rust to form as they are put away for the winter with the engine cold, thermostat closed
I just came in from my garage where I was trying different assembly orders of the housing sleeve and thermostat. I have decided to go with the gasket on the bottom under the thermostat, then the thermostat, then the brass sleeve with the turned in lip at the top. If the brass sleeve has the lip...
I just ran in to this. If you go with B, the brass sleeve sticks up above the housing, and the top will not set down unless you eliminate the gasket under the thermostat.
The correct order is A, with the turned in lip of the sleeve at the top, and the gasket sitting on that. I am just not sure...
You must be on fresh water. Salt water raw cooled engines have a tendency to seize the thermostats closed. After removing mine this last time, (it had been in several years) I will probably open it when winterizing, and clean it up.
There seems to be a couple of different thermostat housings Mercruiser used, which each use a different sleeve and component build up order.
I was curious of the same issue. I just built up a 5.7 and was hoping to find a closed cooling system, but they seem to be impossible to find through...
Thanks for the reply. It was good reading the post and seeing the pics. A slightly different issue with mine, but it does highlight the importance of getting the right part. The ones I see online appear to match what I have, only the tail end letters following the numerical part number is...
I have been away for a while and now getting back to my boat. I am building up a new crate 5.7 Mercruiser as my old intake corroded through and flooded the engine. The exhaust elbows are corroded badly and I am looking at replacing them. I found used ones online with the same part number at...
My three year project is finishing up. I have rebuilt my 1990 Mecruiser 5.7 completley and have run it in my boat several times without the shift cables or thottle cable hooked up. I have a Bravo 2 stern drive mated to it.
I have read that you should not shift the bravo sterndrives with the...
I have read numerous posts on alignment looking for an answer. I seem to have a common problem that my engine is down all the way on the front mounts but it seems like it needs to go a bit lower for alignment. I can fit the alignment bar in all the way but it is a shove rather then a gentle...
I have finally got to installing my engine after two years with it out of the boat. I got it in position, with the rear mount bolts through and just snugged in the nuts but not torqued yet. I checked and played with the alignment and once I had that I commenced to torque the rear mount bolts...
I have a Bravo II sterndrive coupled to a Mercruiser 5.7. I just purchased the seal kit for the gimbal housing, and i am having a problem with the water hose that fits between the bellhousing and the Gimbal housing. Did Mercruiser change the size of this hose?
My old hose seems to be a 5/8 i.d...
I have a Mercruiser Bravo 2 outdrive with a mercruiser 5.7. I am changing out the shift cable at the same time I do the bellows. Looking at pics of the cable core location tool that goes across the bellhousing, it looks like it is only a piece of plate steel or aluminum with a slot. Is this as...
I just installed a new impeller in to my sea water pump for a Mercruiser 5.7 with a Bravo II stern drive. The pump housing has one bolt that threads into the front part of the housing, the remaining bolts that hold the housing together have nuts. The bracket that mounts to the block is directly...
