For consideration, I had an issue a few years back where the throttle for my Bravo1 would sometimes struggle to find neutral, and the button had issues engaging. This made cold starting a nightmare as the button wouldn't do anything. Always thought the problem was in the shifter but my mechanic...
My guess is your single point drain worked fine and you did drain all the water - i would open it again and see if antifreeze comes out. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the block to full after you've drained it, and that's what caused your concern.
I usually drain all my plugs and toss in...
I think it really depends on the conditions your run you boat: fresh vs salt, mooring conditions, amount of use, ect. I put 15-25 hours a year on mine (7.4 merc), in fresh water. Bilge is spotless, rarely has water on the bottom. Stored indoors. Recently did a full ignition tune up after some...
My temp gauge for my 7.4 doesnt have #s, just low and high. Mine always is a tad over the middle - no clue what temp its saying, but I have a 160f tstat and im always comfortable if the gauge reads the same spot when its up to temp. Also had an older 5.7 in another boat that always barely got...
I went with Moroso Ultra 40 race wires for my 454 - the ones i got are engine specific (BBC) and designed to go "under headers" for extra length. I like them because the plug ends are shrink wrapped onto the wires from the factory for extra strength and protection against moisture. They also...
Double check your connections on the sensor and the coil. If you still have no spark, put your old coil back on and test. The TB ignitions use a low resistance coil and i found it almost impossible to find the resistance ratings on any amazon/part store coil without testing. I used an MSD 8222...
Wouldnt crank or wouldnt fire?
If you swapped the coil, hopefully it was the correct resistance and wires were put back in the correct way, same with the sensor.
my carbed 7.4 w/ TB V ignition was having starting issues (cold and hot), and my pickup looked the exact same.
I swapped out the sensor, cap/rotor, wires, and COIL and it mad a world of difference. Everyone will tell you that the coils never fail but I can tell you that the coil was the last...
my carbed 7.4 is an absolute bear to start after not being used for an extended time. I usually crank for 5-10 seconds to fill the bowls, pump twice and leave at quarter-ish throttle, and then crank again, and it usually fires. Sometimes it cranks a little longer with extra pumping.
When im at...
I had the tube on my old 5.7 and it sounded great - ended up doing the same on my 7.4 - mechanic recommended it while he was doing some other service on my B1. Both were noticeably louder.
Its all preference, I personally like noisier boats but I know others really dont!
I went through this same issue trying to match up specs, none of the replacements I could find were confirmed to be correct. I ended up using the MSD #8222 with my TB5. Came recommended by a few different folks. Works great so far, and was cheaper than a mystery coil.
I've ran Pertonix ignitor kits in my old ford F100 and two older mercruiser V8s (228 and a 260), and personally I've never had issues. All motors started/ran instantly better after installing the kit & coil.
Like anything, I'm sure they have had their issues but personally I wouldn't hesitate...
Do you think your leaking a qt every 10 hours or burning? Do the 4.3's have the oil pressure sending unit in the back of the motor like the V8s? If so, maybe your leak and slightly off pressures are stemming from that.
Sorry to the moderators for posting on an old thread but I would provide an update on this for anyone in the future. Boat started like crap when all all summer in 2023. That fall before I winterized it, I took off the ignition coil and it was nasty - the socket was full of corrosion, and the...
