    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

Racerone, You Called It! I replaced the Power Pack and the engine fired right up! I'm happy I was in the 90% club for the above symptoms described! It's on to some tuning. Thanks for the help!

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

I performed a Stop Switch Test and checked the Ignition Coil, Charge Coil, and Sensor Coil resistance measurements. All resistance measurements met specification. I purchased an Electronic Specialties Model 640 Direct Voltage Adapter for use with the Klein CL800. I checked and passed the Charge...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

Racerone, yes, since this 1987 is new to me, I successfully rebuilt the fuel pump given the diaphragm may be 38 years old.

Will do! I ordered these from McMaster Carr.

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

This is a 1987 Johnson 15 HP engine (J15RCUD). Model number confirmed on transom bracket sticker and engine block Welch Plug. This was a transition year for the carburetor and fuel pump designs. I have the early carb version depicted in your diagram (not the newer carb with plastic top), and...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

I will attempt to explain my concern. The first image below (Choke Closing / image 1) is taken when moving the longer lever arm (moved by linear motion of choke in outboard assembly) to close the choke valve. Note the black plastic piece, on the choke valve shaft (shorter lever arm), stays...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

This 1987 has the early carburetor on it, not the later carb with plastic top. My choke linkage occasionally hangs up in the closed position when I push the choke in (no choke position). If I understand correctly, this linkage allows the choke plate to be closed, and if a lever override exists...

    Water Pump Kit P/N 394711 for 9.9 & 15 HP Johnson

OK, thanks for the explanation. I don't have a groove around the top of my 1987 15 HP driveshaft. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something on the assembly.

    Water Pump Kit P/N 394711 for 9.9 & 15 HP Johnson

This kit comes with an O-Ring (item 5) with an internal diameter of approximately 3/8". Where does this O-Ring go? I can't find it mentioned or on any parts diagram in my OEM Service Manual or the water pump kit instructions.

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

OK, I will order a new powerpack. Also, once I get the Klein CL800, I will try and use it to measure peak voltages for the cranking tests. Thanks! PS; flyingscott, your avatar brings back memories. My father had a 7 1/2 HP Scott Atwater with Bail a matic. It was a fine outboard that served us...

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

I believe the black kill wire is the "E" terminal on the 5 pin Amphenol connector. If I understand, you are suggesting the "Stop Circuit Test" in the manual. Thinking I performed the "Stop Switch Test" to confirm kill circuit functionality, I was reluctant to pull the "E" pin from the Amphenol...

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

I have the “CU” 9.9 thru 30 Service Manual and performed the following tests: Stop Switch Test – R and TE Models: Meter correctly shows NO continuity with clip and lanyard installed. Meter correctly shows continuity when stop switch assembly is pushed in. Meter correctly shows continuity when...

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

New to me 1987 Johnson 15 HP engine J15RCUD. I was told this engine hasn’t been run for 4 years. This engine has the newer style fuel pump p/n 399857, but early style carburetor with metal bowl. I understand this was a transition year for the new fuel pump and carburetor, but the carb is the...

CDI Electronics and AGM Battery Compatibility

Upon further digging, I found another article on this subject and it seems the Faztbullet and saltchuckmatt comments are on track with their comments a wet cell battery is necessary and the charging voltage requirements to charge the AGM battery do not match the CDI Electronics...

CDI Electronics and AGM Battery Compatibility

I agree the motor would not be providing the AGM specified 14.1 to 14.8 volts for charging at lower RPM's. This would lead to an under-charging condition for the battery. Why would this void the warranty of the CDI Electronics rectifier/regulator?
