Before I began, I brought both pistons to tdc and backed them down about an inch or twr turning the flywheel clockwise then pushed against the piston with a wood dowel. No movement or sign of slack on either. If there is another test I will try that.

Thanks. That was my intention. I was planning to use the 33’s flywheel and ring gear while keeping the 35’s starter and starter brackets. I’ll do some test fitting before the actual swap. Not planning to transfer the compression release but will transfer the 35’s recoil starter.
