    As you screw the needle in the spring will compress. Screw it in only as far as necessary to very gently seat the needle. Then unscrew it 1½ turns. If you screw it in too firmly you risk jamming the tip in the orifice and then breaking it off leading to a much bigger problem.

    If the battery is disconnected will the engine is running a high voltage peak can be produced. This is what blows the diodes. Not sure why the stator windings would melt . That would require a high current flow

    Make sure that the Bendix pinion assembly can be wound up the starter motor shaft quite freely by hand until it engages with the flywheel.

    At some point in the late 1980s the recommended plug gap for all OMC. engines was changed from 0.040 to 0.030. I understand the reason was to extend plug life. You'll never detect any difference in the way the engine runs

    IF it shifts between forward and reverse OK the shift rod is correctly engaged with the cam

    Wear on the cam should be obvious. There is sufficient drag for the prop to turn when the flywheel is turned. Mine does it! Try holding the flywheel and then spin the prop by hand . If it will turn freely without the flywheel turning you do not have a problem.

    The spring #72 looks Ok but you appear to have sheared the head off the screw #65. Perhaps you will be able to grab hold of the remaining bit of the screw with vice grips and remove it. Then it's just a question of sourcing a replacement screw locally.
