Fuel Sender / Gauge Troubleshooting

I just want to know if I’m on the right track here.

My old fuel sending unit was showing erratic readings on the multimeter so I got a new one. Tested it on the multimeter and it was moving smoothly through the range of 30 to 240 ohms, or what would be empty to full. But when I hook it up to the fuel gauge, even when I manually move the arm all the way to full, it’s only showing 50% on the fuel gauge.

I double checked all of the grounds and even hooked one wire up directly from the sender to the ground terminal on the battery, and it’s still reading the same.

So my thinking is that the sender wire from the fuel sender to the gauge is somehow compromised and impeding the flow of the signal.

For my next test, I’m going to make sure the tank is completely full and see how the gauge reads. If it’s still not reading properly, I’m going to run a new sender test wire directly from the unit to the gauge.

Am I on the right track for sorting this out?

Thanks in advance.
Wayne.

Save yourself some trouble...your gage is bad, replace it. You already know the sending unit is working properly. Only ONE thing left that...isn't.

Well, it turns out it was both the sending unit and the gauge that were hooped. I replaced the gauge and it seems to be reading properly, although I’m not exactly sure how much fuel is in the tank. I will fill it right up then I will know if it is working properly.
The gauge does move when I raise and lower the tongue so I think it’s good to go.
