The national & USCG courses are accepted. Must have a official completion of course certificate with you at all times when driving a motorized boat.

It’s not really a new requirement, just that it drops for everyone this year and they will be checking certifications. Easiest to put the anchor on your license

You can argue semantics if you want, but fact of the matter is this is the first year everyone is required to have one operating a power boat or PWC. Last year, I could still operate my boat without a cert. So new requirement.

A few years ago, it was PWC operators only. At that time DEC said they weren't going to make it retroactive to powerboat operators. Then they did once PWC was fully phased in.

Unfortunately, I can see why they are doing this....having been an avid boater for over 60 years, I see more and more idiots driving boats each year. Boating accidents are at an all time high...if people can't be responsible on their own, the gov't steps in. Doesn't always make things better, but people brought this on themselves by not be responsible in their own...

The cause for the strict law. Is a young girl had the boat back right into her body while the prop was still spinning. Her name was Brianna. The law is called Brianna.
If you RENT a boat ???? You do not need the certificate to drive the boat into someone else.

No permit for rental boat operators ?? Really ? If true, then sounds like a typical gov't idea that only masks the problem and solves nothing...

It ‘kind of’ makes sense. The rental agencies would have the liability with their insurance. I don’t agree with it but it probably falls under a legal loophole at this point.

Driver’s licenses are mandatory as well as CDL for truckers….. yet the highway was closed yesterday for three hours for a multi-truck, rear end accident that killed a one truck driver and spread the load of the other across 3 lanes of highway.

Don’t care how many licenses, diplomas, certifications they require….you can’t fix stupid.

The navigation portion of all these so-called “boaters” courses are a joke.

If you really want to cut down on accidents, require a full USCG license and a TWIX card.

TWIX card covers mental illness, drugs and alcohol…there goes 95% of your pizza eating WOT’ers…..lol

Don’t know of many, if any USCG Captains that want or could run WOT for economic reasons if anything

Auto pilots well….you can’t fix stupid.
Had a friend in a 46’ boat hit by a yacht jockey on AP while down below.
Yacht jockey no longer a problem;)

At one point I had everything lined up to get my 6-pack. Ultimately, due to other people mostly, I backed out. I didn't want the liability of dealing with some other jerkoff on the water god forbid. It's the same reason, despite my bosses persistence it'll be paid in full, that I won't get my CDL. That and I don't want to be voluntold to do anything else at work or with the county...

I did my regular boating course at 12. It was the exact same course my dad took with the USCG back in the 70s. It barely scratches the surface let alone teaches anything that'll stick with the average idiot.

As far as rentals, to the best of my knowledge, the person renting the vehicle is not required to have a license execpt in states that have a separate endorsement for PWCs. Had this problem in Connecticut. You can not operate your own PWC on CT waters without the CT endorsement. (Was pulled over for it and actually issued a moving violation on my driver's license for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.) Now I know. To the best of my knowledge I can find, there's a supplementary bit added onto the course for PWCs. Based on how people drive both on the roads and on the water up there... its a license to be a ****....

MA is getting in the game as well.

"Massachusetts requires a Boater Safety Certificate for anyone born after January 1, 1989, who wants to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft. This is also known as a boating license. The deadline to obtain the certificate is April 1, 2026 for those born after January 1, 1989. Those born on or before January 1, 1989, must obtain their certificate by April 1, 2028".

I know NH has required a cert of some sort for a while.

I'll have to check out the requirements for MA.

PA requires the certification for those born after a certain year. I was exempt, but got it anyway because we wanted to make it a requirement for the Fire Department Water Rescue Team. I have heard rumors that PA is looking at making it mandatory for everyone soon ...

My defense will be...........AI
Actually I fish a maximum of 300' from my dock. I can stand on the bottom and walk to shore / house.
I could just remove the OB and use the full sized oars.
