Last fall I drained my 351 and then pickled it. I pulled the thermostat to do so. I neglected to order a replacement gasket for the thermostat housing last fall. I ordered a half dozen should be good for a while. Keep what you need in stock. Next week when I go pick up new spark plugs 2 sets. Oil filter same.

Yes especially if you can get them on special.
I live away from parts shops and having to stop a project because your missing a simple part is a pita . I have a bit of kit to make my own gaskets .
If I have to buy a gasket I usually scan them and store the data , later I can put gasket paper in the printer ( it takes photo paper so .......) and print out the image and then just cut it out .

My 1984 Mercruiser's OWNER's MANUAL said to drain the water from the easily identifiable plugs, and then pull the TS and fill the empty block with AF. Of course then you need a new TS gasket.

The issue here is that everybody has an idea how to do things, but nobody reads manuals any more.

OTOH, the more I read Forums I realize that considering the spilling and grammare that some people use, almost nobody even knows how to to read anymore.

Classic , at least 6 mistakes in this reply . I can't even call it a sentence. Maybe people can read , they just have a hard time interpreting what is written . Carry on .

Hahaha. I am guilty of some of the mistakes, but they were deliberate to point out the lack of edumacation of some posters.

But then again, I admit that maybe some are not really stoopid, or uneducated, , but don't use spellcheck, or simply don't care what they post.

The damn spell checker or whatever the setup is called that keeps changing my spelling is causing most of my spelling issues. Have not been able to figure out how to turn it off. Whenever I spell Mecury, it changes it to Mercy, and getting tired of having to go back in and change it back. Often I just leave it......so it may not be that folks are poor spellers, the damn computer does what it wants and folks like me are tired of correcting the computer !!

Nah, there was no recommendation for AF in 1984. They added it as optional later, then recommended. All for the same engines.

You should be able to highlight mistakes without the auto correct , which is right up there with predictive text when it comes to pita's.

Americano always can not follow instructions by a company.
Must do a What if I do this instead.
Some people would try to deactivate a A Bomb.

I bought the boat brand new in 1984 and that manual is what came with the boat.

I just looked thru my boat files to scan the winterization pages, but then I remembered that I gave it away when I sold the boat.

Since there were no internet or U-Tube videos back then, and I always did 90% of my own maintenance that book was my only source. I didn't just think it up.

Your reference was for a V6, years 1983-93. I don't dispute what they recommended in later years because I never read a newer book.

I'm really getting forgetful in my old age. As I said I gave the manual to the guy that bought ,my boat, but I just remembered that I also had a FULL Shop Manual that I DID keep.

The attachment is from the big manual, printed by Mercury Marine, copyright 1980.

All moot points anyway, since the OP didn't ask how to do it, but was merely making a comment.

My set up is a bit different, I took the intake hose and put it in a 5 gallon bucket with mixed antifreeze and ran it till the mix was discharged. I used real anitfreeze. I also have a couple of drain cocks way down low. I am running a single screw no outdrive.

The issue started when someone said they didn't pull the TS. I didn't say it was wrong to do that, I merely said that the manual said to do that.

Many of us on this forum don't think it's necessary as long as the water is drained. Mercury's comments were not directed at freeze damage, but more toward rust protection.

My attachment said exactly what I said.

Irregardless (LOL), I have nothing more to say on the subject. I'll take the high road and let you have the last word.

I certainly didn’t mean to offend you. I was taught how to winterize years ago by a merc shop. We would drain the block and power steering cooler, run the fluid through the muffs till it came out the exhaust. Never had an issue. Since joining on here I haven’t used freeze protection much anymore, air doesn’t freeze. No issues with that method either. Other than the anti freeze helps with rust, but being in freshwater helps. I’ve seen blocks that were totally destroyed from improper winterizing. Sad when I see that! But your method according to the manual is fine.
