But if a response is bothering you and you feel that it is belittling you or making light of your situation, or is just unfair or rude, you can always hit the report button. That goes to the Mods only. They see the post in question, will look at the thread, possibly discuss it amongst themselves, then respond to you, delete the offending post if they feel that is warranted, make a post to get the thread about answering the question not harassing a member, or do nothing. But there is no harm in reporting an answer and explaining why you reported it.
Just to add a bit to the list of options above, if the conversation seems to be going really south at personal levels you always have the option to put said member on Ignore via clicking through their username..

Option two could be if felt truly warranted after post reports, etc. the forum moderators do hold an option of keeping members in question still on the forums but restricted from posting in individual threads all in hopes to help do the overall best possible of keeping the peace while in turn not really wanting to lose members that holds value of specific information they enjoy sharing all at no charge like other websites tend to charge for.

Yeah, no doubt social media has changed society and how people treat one another out there, sometimes ugly is an understatement. I believe some can carry those attitudes around the forum world. But that doesn't make it acceptable or right. This forum used to be under extreme moderation in the earlier days. Since then, the mooring lines have been loosened and I believe a few vessels have broke free and need to be recovered.
If anyone is dissatisfied with how they're being treated please contact a moderator. This ship needs to be tightened up....... 🚢
Well said. I really enjoy helping people in distress and the instant grat. info-grab is a real thing. I'm a culinary arts teacher in a Vo-tech school and have seen this escalate just after Covid hit. It was starting to get bad before, but it got cranked up and parents are just as bad.

It's funny this post came up because I had thought about making a similar one. This place is ICY compared to "the old days". The vibe is totally different. But even in the past the "friendliness factor", so to speak, would ebb and flow...one reason I quit frequenting the forum. It definitely is in one of the 'ebb' stages, lol!

To add if it hasn’t been said. Sometimes the written word on the internet doesn’t transfer well. What might be interpreted by the reader as harsh or belittling might not be the posters intent at all. Have seen it many times. Sometimes a simple private message can clear things up.

This.

And most all the folks replying here should not be on your list of folks. TBH I rarely have issues across forums but then again I am thick skinned to start with so I prob don't notice.

If you have a couple three that you're thinking of send to a mod. They have all been around a minute and may be able to 'interpret' another long term members reply.

Also, check the time of the reply. Weekend, at night, tend to be more alcohol directed responses.....

I was not acive during that period but was on THT and that is why I landed here shortly afterwards. I disagree with we need more moderation, I think we have found a comfy spot. Myself (not a mod) and others can and do callout posts as needed. I usually post about staying civil and then report post. Hell ive even reported my own posts when not sure if im being too much. Most usually simmer down or yall mods find them.

My only suggestion to mods is to not call out publicly if can be avoided. If offending post is recent, 99% of the folks won't see it before you can do yalls mod thing and few will be the wiser. In my 40 or so years of managing people I learned there is few few reasons (not none) to manage publicly.

My inflation adjusted .27% cents worth of opinion.... ya get what ya pay for...

Off to do some more rivets.

I know thick skin has been mentioned before, I believe no one should be required to have thick skin to participate in this forum. It should be an inviting atmosphere for members to ask question and/or supply advice.
Any action a Mod feels/needs to be addressed with a member is done behind the scenes. The exception is when a thread gets derailed and there is multiple members involved in a back and forth conversation, then it will be addressed within that thread.
Speaking of conversations, this is a good one....😉

Thick is relative. Non verbal, typed words are easy to misconstrue on both ends. Email at work has taught us that.

I see even this thread starting to tangent off

We all look through are mental image, and that's not the same as another's

Example
Someone wants to put a 250HP motor on a canoe.
Some look at this as stupid and shout it out
Others try to explain how and why (note the why) this is a bad idea
Another states how you can be sued and others can die

In short, most all of us can and do the knee jerk response (include my self in this) , but what we all should do is softly and clearly respond why with facts, and not just opinion is the reasoning

The thing I despise is someone coming across as God anointed and my way is the only way. Other than that all is ok and again the "unwatch" button is GREAT
Yup, to all of the above.

Especially the self-anointed Gods who are like:

Thank you. I agree that a thick skin should not be required here. I've been on other non-boat forums which were a real free-for-all and they weren't very pleasant.

There are a couple of guys here that I have on ignore. Mostly the holier-than-thou types.

And there are others who are also not-so-welcoming but who sometimes have useful info to share, so I bear with them for the time being.

As others have said, I've also noticed a downturn in friendly advice or exchange of experience/knowledge lately. Too many times it seems like a mine's bigger than yours contest. Or carping up a thread with politics or going way off topic. There's one of those going on in the Freshwater Fishing forum even now. Been going on for a couple weeks.

So, I've been posting less and using the like button (or not) on threads lately.
