Hi,

I have a 60hp evinrude that has been running poorly in the water and will get to a point where it won't even start. I pulled the plugs to compression test (#1 - 125psi, #2 - 130psi, #3 - 130psi) and found cylinder #3 had water in it. I blew it out and sprayed wd-40 in it and got it running to clear it out.

Is a leaking head gasket the only way water could be get in that cylinder? Obviously unless the engine went under somehow, which hasn't happened. Or could it have something to do with the exhaust manifold holding water also?

Thanks

Likely the exhaust gaskets ( 3 of them ) have a leak.------Compression should be 140 + on it.-----Rempove cylinder head to inspect and replace the 3 exhaust gaskets.----If water gets on any bearings it spells death for the motor.

Thanks for the info, what should I be looking for in the exhaust gaskets? It doesn't look like the manifold has ever been off, where it could have been put back together wrong.

You are surprised by a 1986 engine having a problem ? Have a good mechanic check out the engine.
Before you do more damage to it.
Get the water out of all the cylinders. The Piston rings may be rusting now.

The exhaust plates are likely warped.--They develop a leak.------And after 40 years these wonderful motors need some attention.-----Perhaps not what you want to hear.

No, it's fine. I appreciate the info. I have gaskets and carb rebuild kits on the way. Would you happen to know what factory hi/low speed screw settings are? Or where I can find a manual?

Sorry ----There are no mixture adjusting screws on these 60 HP carburetors.

I rebuilt the carbs and wanted to hear it run on the hose before tearing the exhaust manifold apart. Primed it up and it filled the water separator pretty much with straight water. So for now I’m assuming that’s where the water in the engine came from. I hooked up to one of my mower gas cans and primed it up again. It fired up then died and does that constantly. Even with the throttle on start function. Seems to be running out of gas. I noticed some gas leaking out of the top of the round black plastic part with the red switch on top (the two oil lines and fuel line come from that). What is that? Does the red switch need to be in a specific position? Where do the wires on it go to? Lastly what does the knob below the key do? I can see there used to be stickers there.

Thanks for the help.
