2009 Volvo Penta 5.7 GXIE-K, DPS-A, EVC-3, Single engine application.

Hi all, I developed an EVC Fault that is effecting the helm control panel (attached), the control panel only intermittently works, flickering in and out. The fault code is the following: HID 164 PPID 397 FMI 9, no other faults have occurred.
Did some basic trouble shooting, checked the connection at the HCU (EVC-3 Part # 3884479), unplugged and back in a few times. Power cycled, etc. Occasionally it stays fully operational, no code is thrown, but it's rare.
All other helm functions seem to work normally: electronic shift and throttle control work flawless, EVC display on my Tachometer reports all other data, and again no other faults have appeared.

-Seems like it could be the HCU or the Control panel. I'd like to check the voltage at the pinouts on the HCU, anyone have info on the six pins?
-Does the Control panel (pictured below) require programming via VODIA or is it 'dumb' plug and play? (I know a new HCU would need programming)
Any other trouble shooting I should be doing?

Thank you!

First things first.
What other panels are installed on the boat?
power trim panel?
sport fish panel?

Yes the control panel can be replaced, but will require you to run auto config.

Any time a node has been added into the system or a node has been replaced, an auto config must be performed.

There are sometimes problems when replacing nodes. They will sometimes need a software update and if the HCU doesn't have the latest cals loaded in them, then Vodia is needed.

The service manual I have is #47709074 Print date 08-2009
Workshop Manual
Diesel engines D3-D16
Gas engines
Group 30 Electrical system
EVC-C3

There maybe a newer version available, I'm retired and no longer have access to the latest info. I would recommend you check with a Volvo dealer and see if there is a newer version.
The manual I have has a nice troubleshooting tree in it along with the wiring pin out you will need.

Hey Muc,

Thanks for the quick reply. No other dash mounted panels/control other than the Volvo tachometer gauge, with the small integrated EVC display under it. I have a side mount shifter/throttle/with trim control (electronic controls).

My local Volvo certified shop apparently gave up the business sometime in the last 18 months, so it makes everything a bit harder. A lot of qualified mechanics, but lack of Vodia access.

Yes, finding a highly qualified Volvo tech can be hard. I have helped some people that had to take their boat to a Volvo Truck dealer, one that had to pay travel time to their slip! Some Volvo truck centers even have someone with a bit of marine knowledge. And they all have Vodia.

The reason I asked about the extra panels is they go before the control panel, so change the trouble shooting. You are on the right track. Maybe this will help.
