Anyone ever make a trailer longer? How do you determine where the winch should be placed? Is there any sort of chart or guide that gives placement for the winch, jack stand, etc?

Longer tongue to a point. You slide the winch Stand to put the boat where you want it on the trailer and then move the axle or axles to adjust your tongue weight

As you add Material to the Trailer, you are reducing its Load Capacity, by an equal Amount

Why are you adding, how much are you adding, what is current rig, etc.

Make sure you watch this and very much respect the physics behind it.

do you need to make adjustments? or go longer?

as indicated above, lengthening an existing trailer lowers its load capacity.

also as indicated, the rest is just math and physics. you want between 7% and 10% tongue weight for stability. the bunks/rollers and bow stop locate the boat to get here.

the winch location depends on the trailer type, the roller/fairlead type, the boat bow shape and hook location, and how high the winch is in respect to the bow eye.

the trailer jack is located where it is convenient to not interfere with the winch stand, the rear bumper of the tow vehicle, the spare tire, etc.

if you are just adjusting an existing trailer, you can make a decent amount of adjustments within the length and load capacity.

however if you need to lengthen the trailer........

easy to lengthen any boat trailer in 3 easy steps AND increase its load capacity.

Step 1. Sell the existing trailer for a small pile of cash
Step 2. Empty your wallet onto the pile making the pile bigger
Step 3. Buy the trailer you need to fit your boat.

The three steps you recommended is definitely the way I'll go.

I've seen this done a few times, but you have to make sure that the trailer frame is heavy enough to support the weight of the boat and you get proper tongue weight.

We did this to mine recently and its worked out great so far. I have a little 16 foot tin boat though, so weight isn't very heavy (1000 trailer and all i think).

If you are talking inches on a light boat, go for it. You never did tell us the complete story. Like if you just asked should I marry this girl. She could be a millionaire and beautiful or your sister. Need complete info.
