It’s stuck! Might have messed up trying to figure out why it has trouble getting in/out of neutral.

2004 regal 1800 with a Volvo penta 4.3 GL. I’ve only taken the boat out once and the throttle control was having a lot of trouble getting in/out of neutral. My plan was to take it off and test the cables and the mechanism to see if anything was sticking. I disconnected the gear cable (I think), and being overly curious I rotated the arm it was connected to. It clicked… and now it’s stuck. I’m trying to avoid messing it up more if I already did. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

I could be wrong but I think you have to reinstall the shift lever to be able move the control arms on that style of control....is it a Sea Star? Looks like it might be....Volvo OEM was Sea Star for a while....

Not sure. I can’t find any numbers or markings on it. Other than the sticker about the start-in-gear protection. I’ll try putting the handle back on.

Had to press to neutral button down and use the handle to heave it back into place. Seems like it is indeed the gear shifting cable that’s the problem, it’s pretty sticky! Thanks for your help! Now onto figuring out how to replace the cable! Thanks

Just to update this post in case anyone else out there needs it one day. This is to replace a control cable for a 2004 Regal 1800 bowrider. It has the Volvo Penta 4.3 GL and Volvo Penta SX outdrive. I found this video helpful to get the cable removed.

Well I’m glad you said that, cause now that it’s disconnected, it does move pretty well. There a little bit of rust on it and some water was coming out of the cable. Now im not sure how smooth the linkage on the drive actually is. I’ll see if I can post a video

I had my neighbor move the cable to where it’s at a little bit of an angle while I tried to shift it and the problem came right back. So I think it is the cable. Something is binding up inside when it’s not perfectly straight. He also noticed some fun tidbits that I didn’t, look at the picture of this little homemade guy that was connecting the cable to the drive. That would be part of a ratchet that somebody drilled out and welded. Also noticed the little plate holding the cable in place is bent.
