I have a 19 ft wellcraft center console. I boat on the nj coast can someone recommend what electronic i need that can trace my route and also show where it's safe to navigate. I feel like I'm just winging it at times and it's very unsettling. I don't feel like the channels are well marked and it would be great if there were a unit that could ease my mind. Something affordable and easy to use please. Don't care too much about fish finding ability but it wouldn't hurt to have it or I can also keep my current humminbird fish finder. Thanks

Seeing that you are moving through channels , you should have a navigation system that is updated very often because after a good storm the channel may be somewhere else altogether. A good fishfinder will provide you with constant depth information. May advise would be a navionics often online updated setup with a split screen so you have the fishfinder that gives you constant depth reading. I use a Garmin 93 setup with navionics and ActiveCaptain app which allows me to get updates online, but other brands may be just as good or better.

I have a Lowrance hook reveal2 ts . Basic ( no touch screen ) and easy to use ( lots of tuition on you tube ).
TS is for triple shot which is sonar ( fish finder ) , down scan and side scan. the scans give a good image and its fun to play with. They are useful when trolling in shallow water as you can see the old push bikes , supermarket trolleys and weighted bodies and avoid them before you snag them.

Visit your local boating/ fishing store such as bass pro or Cab else's and look at their displays. There people should be able to explain and demonstrate the various units. I have an older (2013) Low dance with a North American card that shows alk the waterways in north America and can be updated with your computer every so often. Most have their own preference, but if you have access to a good sporting goods store, they can show you all the pros and cons and prices !!

Buy the biggest display you can afford or that fits on your boat.

Maps wise, I would go with the company whose survey vessels you see the most in your area.

Ever seen a CMAP or Navionics survey vessel in your area? Me neither. ;)

yep small displays suck , specially from other end of the boat .
N ah , I have never seen any survey vessels but then I dont spose they are sign written;).
there must be a lot of info gained from peeps who upload bathymetric info . My gps has a "Genesis " thing where it records data .... like a local lake which of course c-map doesnt do . I can record info and upload it somewhere where others can access it .............beats me I dont use it but I can still enter trails and way points where I catch fish on an un charted lake .
TBH most of the reason I have a GPS is so I can see where I really am and where I have to go to get home without clubbing any "surprise " rocks .......round here they are prolific.........I reckon they bloody move too:). I also sit in my boat in the driveway scrolling thru the map looking for likely fishy structure and then set a track to get there. Like plan the trip before you leave home
