Had a friend up and his wife and kids and their friends for a day on the water. First trip on the tube the ski boat dies. Call to the dock to get a kayak to paddle out so I could paddle in to get the pontoon to tow the ski boat in. Got back to the dock and put the pontoon in reverse to stop at the dock, nope nothing the prop is spun, lucky to get back to the dock. 2 boats out of commission in an hour, what a great day on the water.

That stinks. However, a lot of times, if you boat a lot, stuff like that happens.

Some years ago, I had a runabout with an intermittent ignition. I had already been towed in by all my neighbors (before tow boats had been invented). I asked wifey to stand by with the speedboat, to tow me in, when I broke down.

Wifey proceeds to drive speedboat all over bay at high speed and it seizes on her, and she limps in to dock. Meanwhile the runabout ignition dies as expected. I get towed in by municipal "Underwater Search and Rescue".

Later that day I get a friend with his waverunner to tow both of my boats individually to the ramp for pull out. A fisherman on the shore sees me towed by twice, and comments.

Gee, I had to tear down my inline 6 Merc and rebuild it. I still didn't know what was wrong with the ignition on the runabout. I was glad to get back to work, at least for a while. I was a manager, and although the boats did not obey me, some of my staff did.

I think I have the ski boat trouble shot. No voltage to the coil, no voltage to the resistor no voltage at the final connection at the solenoid yet 12 volts going in. Easy Napa parts fix I hope.

Man, that is a ruination of expectations! Sorry for the messed up day ...

I felt like crap my friend is a fellow wildland fire fighter he suffered a brain injury line of duty. Hey come on up bring the kids for a fun day on the water, instead it was a failure. Kids still kayaked and paddle boarded and fished but still not the epic day that was planned.

Dodged the break out another $1000 syndrome, I am cheap I refuse to finance toys so my boats are not new, that being said you have to learn how to fix them because nobody knows how to work on boats over 15 years old. I relied on a website and learned solenoid is bad it is a Napa part not a boat part pretty easy fix but now I know the trouble shooting and path. Dang boat has the same motor as a 1990 F150 only it has points.

Just tossing it out there auto and marine solenoids are different. Marine versions are made not to make sparks. Sparks on a boat are not good.

If it makes you feel better my boat still leaks and now a breakup that was resolved from a couple years ago is back. I'm ready with lighter fluid and a match.

As long as you didn't make a big deal of it and let the kids be kids, it was an epic day for them. No stress you did good.

I don't get big feelings when things go awry so I didn't wreck the day. New prop arrived today, still trouble shooting the gremlin on the other boat.

Is the starter not turning? Or are you referring to a different solenoid? Could be a bad spot in the starter winding and it stopped at the dead spot.

Every once in a while we have one of those days where we wonder why we ever got out of bed ! But then again, if every day was perfect, think how boring that would be !!
