50 to 100 per square mile is a lot. Definitely too many. You couldn’t swing a cat without hitting one. They just extended deer season here by another month to attempt to thin the heard a bit.
It’s estimated that there are about 50 deer per square mile here on the open hunting lands and 100 per square in the restricted areas. The extra month is for primitive fire arms only but there are a lot of bow hunters so it may help. There is rarely a day that goes by without seeing at least one deer roaming the streets in broad daylight and I spend a lot of time walking the trails in the woods in the evenings where I may see a dozen or so daily. The tic population is getting out of control around here.
They have a share the harvest program here that does the same type of thing. People are lucky that get it. Venison is really good lean red meat. It’s expensive if you buy it.They paid a bounty for does a couple years ago to try and encourage that. I’m not sure if that still is in play.
The local hunters association will take any unwanted harvests. They have several volunteers that will process it and they donate it to the senior centers and food banks or anyone that’s in the know both on and off the island. A friend of mine has a sweet setup on his farm and has several walk-in coolers and freezers to get the job done.
