What did the installation guide say about it?
Most are pretty specifics about areas to avoid

On mine, the number of locations that satisfied the installation requirements where limited.

Can be very tricky to figure out.....there are areas to avoid, but finding that sweet spot can be time consuming. Some hit that spot first try, then tell everyone how easy it was, while others never find that sweet spot and blame the unit. I would seriously consider a mounting plate to attach to your transom, so you can move the transducer without drilling more holes into your transom. Fiberglass boats are usually much easier due to lack of rivets and smoother hulls. Depth of transducer can also affect the reading.
Read on mfgrs recomendations, then run a test, don't be surprised if you end up moving it a few times, thus the reason for using a mounting plate to begin with. Good luck...

In-between the keel and the first long strake on the bottom. Top of the transducer should be same height as bottom of the hull. Some transducers have deeper needs.
You MUST MUST put a cable clamp close to the transducer. I drill and tap for a small screw to hold the cable clamp. DO NOT let cable be whipped around at maximum speed !!!!!
