Trim gauge not working

I worked at the spaghetti factory (wiring) all day. I got most of it done.
Trim gauge is not working. The trim gauge might not be original. there is no wire for the light and I can tell it never had a wire hooked to it. the hole is cut out different from the rest.
Gauge is out of boat and I get 116 ohms. Is that ok?
Two wires are together a white and black stripe that was hooked to the signal post And a tan wire that was not hooked up to anything.
What reading should I get from the signal wire?
Thank you.

Gee, you might tell us the make of the motor.

Trim senders are usually a variable resistor. As the motor trims, the resistance to ground changes. The trim gauge has basically the same movement as a fuel gauge.

Trim gauges need power, ground and the sender wire.

Tan is usually a warning signal for overheat pr some other alarm.

BTW - IMO trim gauges are not important. I would swap it out for a water pressure gauge for an OB and a water temp gauge for an I/O.

I have difficulty getting the engine trimmed to the sweet spot. It doesn’t have a trim pin. Maybe I’ll get a trim pin and put it on the sweet spot.
The engine has lots of power so I don’t need to adjust trim after I find the sweet spot.
It’s on a 1994 StarCraft walleye 180. (Super fisherman)

You might like to check the ohm range of the sender on the motor. That range seems too limited.

Some of the Mercs did not have factory senders, so you might have a look at it.

It’s possible that it never worked. Whoever installed it didn’t hook up the backlight.
I’ll have to check the sender tomorrow.
Thank you.

The sender isn’t connected to the bolt with the slot in it. Possibly the wrong sender. The gauge moves when i turn the sender by hand.
I’ll modify the sender to allow it to stick out farther and into the slot in the bolt.
