Ok, not a deer hunter. Why not shoot this year?
It will be a heavier rack next year. Bud is at the point in his life where he's just trophy hunting...He's in an area that produces big bucks. Although, for a lot of hunters/ areas this guy is a trophy...

I like a big rack, but any and every deer is a trophy for me … and antler soup just isn’t that great …
No doubt. The guy is 73, has shot(I mean harvested) a ton of deer in his lifetime. He just likes being in the woods. So if he pulls the trigger it needs to be big. He has quite the trophy room. Alot of stuff from overseas.... He lives to hunt and fish. But hunting is his passion. He's not a rich man by any stretch of the imagination. Still works part-time....

I am a little younger than him and haven't hunted overseas, but had an offer to hunt a guys farm in South Africa. And I work full time ... the rest is pretty close. However, when I pull a trigger it is to fill the freezer, not the wall. Just a different perspective is all. I admire him and his patience to hold out for that "big one." I wish him the best of luck.

With that said, every deer, elk, turkey, squirrel, grouse, rabbit, woodcock, duck, or geese I have killed has been a trophy to me. I keep a log of every deer and elk killed and where. I rehearse each harvest over and over because they are all special and a gift. That is just me.

Absolutely! Everyone has different reasons for hunting. I completely get putting food on the table. I also understand that priorities can change and people just like the hunt and if they shoot something, great, if not that's fine too. I think as a person gets older priorities can change, but not always. I was just explaining my friends reasoning.....
Documented each critter? I'll do 1 better. We used to document every day, of every deer season, of each hunter what happened that day. We also broke it down between am/pm. Those logs are priceless since it was the 3 of us. Dad and 2 sons....

These days I’m out primarily for the meat, and archery only at this point, at least for now. Love everything about the challenge of using archery equipment. Friends of mine are into trophies. They’ll spent a lot of money to travel all over to hunt and pass on bucks I’d take in a heartbeat. All fair chase no high fence stuff. Big trophy rooms. Hunting with my son and grandsons are the best hunts. When my son got his first deer and my grandson shot his first buck, a spike, were definitely the highlights of my time hunting to date. Far surpass that of any big buck I ever shot. Got one more grandson to go. It’s been passed down from my father, to me, to my son, and now my grand kids. A lot of today’s youth have no interest in hunting.

Wow, Musky, your families documentation of your hunts are super cool! Nice! And yes, wasn't meaning to put your friend down in what he likes. Just he and I have a different perspective at this time. But in the recent years the drive to be out there every day and kill as many as I have tags for has faded. I am pickier about my shots and what goes in the freezer or is given to those who have food needs. My attitudes towards hunting are constantly evolving.

And yes, Flathead, seeing a younger one join the sport and seeing the reaction to their "first" can be so much fun and so worth it all. Better than the biggest buck I could possibly kill!

I only ever shot 2 deer , both when I was supposed to be rabbit/hare shooting . Both leapt out of a bush under my feet and both copped 1 1/4oz of lead in the noggin , Same farm , years apart .
the plot is Daryl ( land owner ) and me on the quad , me on the back with a rem 870 wingmaster . Daryl drives works the spotlight and wears helmit coz he got sick of me whacking him on the head with the barrel as I changed sides, also wears an open knapsack full of ammo ( so its right there in front of me ) and we zoomed around the farm all night lookin for anything stupid enough to get seen .
Good times

You’d be fined big time, loose your gun, your quad, and hunting privileges if you did that here.

anywhere other than private land here would be the same .
While it may sound a bit loose we were actually doing a bit of pest control . The land borders on a huge forestry block and there are issues with pigs , goats, deer , rabbits hares and possums . its a legitimate job ..... or was .... been a while .:)

I have a friend who once managed to take down 2 deer with 1 shot. They were standing side by side the round went through the 1st dear and the 2nd taking both of them down.

DNR didn't originally believe the story but he had 2 others who witnessed the shot so he took 2 on 1 tag.

Me I am not a hunter I only hunt animals through a camera lense.

Actually I have just watched a doco on TV where on of Daryls neibours has been running a feral game recovery business and he claims to be taking around 5000 feral deer annually , mostly thermal image shooting at night , also takes hares and is looking at doing pigs too

Ex brother in law did the same thing. I had an extra tag so we just tagged it. They both laid right on top of each other. He said he didn’t see the 2nd deer standing behind the other one till he walked up and there they were!
