Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Two more coats of gelcoat on the transom area. Five coats on the exterior transom, four coats on the inner. Last coat with surfacing wax. Tabbing complete on bow deck. Cut all the supports for the bow seats. Glad I was able to save patterns. The secret of my success. Fiberglass coated...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Lots of detail and prep work. Smoothed out fillets on bow deck and laid down a layer of CSM tabbing. Glued down support beams over fuel tank. Two coats of gelcoat on the transom inside and out. Dressed up the motor mounts more and faired a lot of areas that needed it. It's a long process to...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

2 layers of 1708 on the flat area the motor sits on completed tonight. A total of two layers of 1.5 oz CSM, and two layers 1708. I would have finished tabbing but things get very sticky, very quick. Hopefully will be done with the motor mounts tomorrow.

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Got a little bit done tonight. Prepped the motor mounts for some glass. Needed to improve a few of the fillets and grind some nubs smooth. While the fillets were kicking I mixed up some hairy PB and glued in the bow plywood with fillets. After that I put two layers of 1.5 oz CSM on the tops of...

    Deck hatch recommendations

Anyone have any recommendations for boat hatches. I am looking for white plastic hinged type. The hatches will be walked on so latch handles need to be flush. Obviously they need to by sturdy, and not pose a tripping hazard. I am currently restoring a boat that has a ski locker. I moved the fuel...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Thanks sir.....I don't ever want to this again, seal it right and forget it. I finished the bow section today. Made more PB with a little hair to glue it down. Seven screws held it fast. I should have taken a picture of how I did this myself. I put the piece of ply wood in place. I used some...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Cleaned up the top of the bow deck. Made some slow kicking resin to seal the edges of the deck. Screws some cleats to hold the deck in place and gave them a drink of resin. Waiting for everything to kick.

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Started out capping the ends of my motor mounts, bedding them a little better, and glueing in pipes I installed yesterday. I installed an aluminum tray to keep my fuel fill tube from sagging prior to foaming. I installed a new fuel fill line and a new vent. I also cut the fiberglass coated...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Thanks Ted. I actually used hairy PB to seal the holes for the conduit and pipe. I had some bedding to finish up with the motor mounts and had a little left over.

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

I temporarily installed the inner transom plate to get some accurate measurements for the motor mounts. After some trimming and a few modifications I glued them in place with hairy PB. I used a scissors jack to clamp them in place. I decided to install a piece of 3/4" CVPC and 1/2" conduit...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

A few small odds and ends tonight. I fit the gimbal housing back on the transom just to check fit. Like a glove. I sanded and put two layers of 1708 on the cut out. I cut the keyhole just a hair big, so closing it up and sealing it sounds like a good idea. I wrapped plastic around some 1/2"...

    U-joint bellows

I'm just curious, my Alpha I gen I has worm gear clamps on both ends of the u-joint bellows. I have seen a lot of instructions for drives that have the compression ring on the bell housing side of the bellows, but not much for what I have. 1. When did the change to the compression ring take...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Ok, two more coats of gel coat. So that's a total of 2 coats with out wax, last coat with surfacing wax. Once it kicked, the gel coat feels silly smooth. Very pleased. No pictures of that since it's white, like yesterday's pics. I also worked on cleaning up the gimbal housing. There was a lot...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

I need to add two support members over the top of the fuel tank. Chaparral used solid lumber 2" thick. I decided to laminate strips of the 1/2" fiberglass coated plywood I used for stringers. I'm extending this a bit on either side of the stringer to add additional support for the seat bases. I...

Chaparral 2000 SL Sport floor, and more?? [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Finished glassing in the fuel tank supports. Should be ready for gel coat!! Also got the special hinge bolt tool to separate the gimbal ring from the bell housing. Pulled the bellows off. Looks like I'll need to make a very deep 9/16" socket to finish removing the shift cable. It doesn't look...

    Steel fasteners stuck in aluminum

Anyone have a "magic" bolt freeing juice they use to help free up seized bolts in aluminum. A couple of examples are the stainless hydraulic compression fittings in an aluminum manifold. Also the steel nyloc nut on the aluminum anode bolts that go through the mercruiser gimbal housing. This...

    Gimbal housing to transom

I'm buying a new seal, and anode bolt kit, to mount my gimbal housing to my transom. Just curious if it's necessary or recommended to add sealant to the seal. It doesn't appear as though the gimbal housing had sealant on it when I pulled it off. I was looking for opinions or best practices...
