Cobra SX lower unit drain plug will not open

I had the same issue on my Cobra SX. I used an impact gun and 1/2” drive flat head screw driver socket to loosen it. Make sure the driver socket is new (sharp edges) and it’s full flush in the screw when you use the impact gun. I bought a larger than needed driver and filed/ground it down to fit...

1998 VP 5.0Gi looses power, maybe in protection mode

There should a limp (SLOW) mode that receives signals from a dedicated oil pressure switch and a water temperature switch that kicks in at 2500 rpm. The gauges for these run off separate sensors. I believe the switches go to ground when activated.

Neutra Salt System Solenoid and pully question VP 5.7 Gi-f

@MalibuMike, To test the solenoid, first make sure you're getting 12V to it when the switch is depressed with multimeter to the two wires. Then confirm the inlet hose is not plugged by removing it from the solenoid and confirming solution flow. Then do as you suggest by removing the outlet...

    Help with DPS-B 1.95 outdrive

Maybe try shifting while under pressure or vacuum. That way you exercise the shift seal.

Temp gauge vs. laser thermometer at thermostat housing

I did this per Bt's suggestion on my boat and it worked pretty good. If you can find a smaller pot than 5K it will be easier to find the correct resistance value. The 5K pot is very sensitive around the 55 ohms I ended up with. Just removing it to measure it can change the value a bit.

DP-SM Raw water hose fitting stuck

I've run into the same issue with the fitting being difficult to remove due to housing corrosion. I just swung the rubber mallet harder to get it out. This is with pivot housing removed. I then cleaned up the corrosion and applied liberal grease when I installed the new one. I did this for...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

In addition to what Scott said, get an IR gun to confirm the temperature at the thermostat housing matches the gauge and to ensure the risers aren't too warm. I would plan on cleaning the heat exchanger to ensure it's operating at max efficiency. That could explain the 180 deg temp. Also...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

I don't see an outer cup for the outer bearing in the hub. Are you including that in the installation?

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

What brand rotor/hub is this? Kodiak, Dexter? Below is a link to example brake section views for Kodiak brakes. You can compare the critical measurements of your spindle and hub against the correct section view and determine what is out of place...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

It sounds like the inner race is somehow in the hub too far. You should be able to find a cutaway view drawing of the hub/axle/brake assembly on line. With that start making measurements of the spindle, hub, and race locations to confirm they are correctly positioned. Are you sure you have...

owners manual chris craft 253 1974

Here's the manual that came with my '95 Chris Craft Concept 21. Most of the info is generic and would apply to your boat. I can't remember where I found it.

Trimming with Outdrives and Trim Tabs

Thanks for the response. While the other owner has had the boat for five years, their background is sailing. They are just putting the drives all the way nose down and solely trimming with the tabs. Thanks for the manual Scott. The Bennett manual with the boat didn't have a section on Trim...

Trimming with Outdrives and Trim Tabs

I recently acquired a 50% share in a 30' Commander Sport Cruiser with twin Volvo diesels and outdrives. The boat also has trim tabs that I don't have much experience with since my current 21' Chris Craft only has an outdrive, which I trim up and down to trim the boat. I know how to trim with...

Question on boat shopping: 1999 Crownline 202 5.0 liter

5.0L for a 20' boat should be fine. That's likely the upper range of the engine sizes offered for that boat. Lower end boats of that size would come with a 4.3L.

    1995 OMC 5.0L Electrical mishap

Being a '95 he probably has a Cobra SX (Volvo) with engine mounted raw water pump. I'd just fire it up for a few seconds to confirm it starts, with the drive down to be easy on the U-joints.

Trailer needs attention on used flat bottom.

Just raise the bunks so they take more of the load. Looks like they slipped down.

How in the heck do you get these spark plugs out??

You should be okay once you get the plug socket with the integral swivel. There isn't room to pull the plugs with a separate swivel on these engines, as you're finding out.

    Good Source for Trailer Axles?

Finally received the Speedi Sleeves and got them installed. They don't entirely cover the grease ports, which is expected since the seal lip needs to be inboard of the port. I could punch out the hole more fully, but I've frankly given up on using this "Sure-Lube" system. More often than not...

    Trim sensor and gauge

I would remove the sensor from the drive while still connected electrically, then rotate the input while monitoring the gauge. Can you rotate the input so that the gauge needle moves full travel? If not, then the sensor isn't compatible with the gauge. If you can get full travel, trim the...

    1995 OMC 5.0L Winterizing

Did you poke the open drain with a slender object? They can get plugged with rust flakes, so you're supposed to poke the drains to ensure they're clear. It is preferred to just drain the raw water cooling system (drains, hoses, etc) verses adding anti-freeze. As Scott says, air doesn't freeze.
